The enclosed letter was received July 6, 1991. WORK HISTORY 1964 - 1985 GMC Central Foundry - Core Room - Laborer Maintenance Dust Control 1957 - 1964 Defiance Belts Products - Milk Processing Production Line 1952 - 1957 Bricker Electric Plating - Parts Washing Laborer MEDICAL HISTORY Dr. Nils V. Gomez, M.D. notes on January 28, 1989, "Both lung fields are clear except for incidental finding of mild linear fibrosis in the right lung base." On June 14, 1989, Dr. Atwell diagnosed the claimant as having pneumoconiosis from exposures at the Central Foundry. Dr. Atwell's opinion of the probable cause of pneumoconiosis is exposure to mixed dust and/or silica dust. Asbestosis .and silicosis are examples of pneumoconiosis with fibrosis. EXPOSURE POTENTIALS This section focuses on the work history at the Central Foundry since the diagnosis identifies this workplace. Numerous occupational disease investigations at General Motor's Central Foundry (GMCF) at Defiance have established the presence of airborne crystalline silica (quartz) and asbestos. The specific claim numbers which identify the airborne exposures can be provided if desired. General Motors Central Foundry OD 41515-22 Robert Keys Page 2 The claimant's work at General Motor's Central Foundry included cleaning of the foundry dust collection systems. Dust falling on machinery was blown off by the claimant. Airborne quartz exposures in the core room are possible. General Motor's Central Foundry had a plantwide asbestos removal program started November 16, 1976. Asbestos was used in hot blast ducts, on pipes and fittings. Any personal heat protection clothing contained asbestos. CONCLUSION The claimant's exposures to unknown concentrations and durations of airborne quartz and asbestos are reasonable. Sampling results for silica and asbestos (for the claimant's work site and job description) were requested, but not provided by GMC. No results characterizing exposures for the claimant's job description were in the Division files.
