Because I have spent quite a bit of time in China, Kevin and Susan suggested that I forward any advice. While I have not had alot of direct experience working with the media, I can talk to the interests of Chinese business, bureaucrats and the people. So, here a couple of comments that may be helpful. This is background info only. The Chinese are used to foreign companies working in China. The sight of westerners does not impress nearly as much as they did 5 years ago. We are no longer novelties. It is common to observe Westerners speaking/acting condescendingly to the Chinese, even in business meetings, as if they were there as the saviour to China's ills. Most of the time, Westerners are oblivious that they are behaving this way. However, the Chinese do pick up on this, and it fuels an historical resentment?/mistrust of foreigners. The Chinese must be addressed on equal terms. The concept of mutual benefit and cooperation is paramount. Getting this across to the press, would be advantageous. Finally, as part of joining the developed world, the Chinese want to receive as many international accreditation/associations as possible. I quite often encounter companies that have basically gone 'logo hunting' in an effort to gain recognition/certification, etc. So, reinforcing the international aspect of the cooperation will help to make the local organization appear much more official, creditabile. Be ready to list of the supporting international organizations for your activity. The press will misquote you; it is a certainty. If there are glaring errors, make the effort to have them corrected. Let the 'small' errors pass. Get the name card (business card) of the interviewer. This will come in handy later if a retraction is necessary or if you have something new to say. New agreements between Western companies and Chinese companies are reported every day, especially in Shanghai. Sometimes it is difficult to get your story reported. The personal contact will help.
