Klinger cannot be added to the approved vendor's list since there is no supporting service test information available. 2. On the issue of compressed asbestos vs. non-asbestos gasket material, asbestos gasket material is still available. There is no equivalent compressed non-asbestos gaskets manufactured that we know of (compressed asbestos may be used to 650F). The Klinger gaskets that were delivered to us for testing were never installed. We have a Complex procedure for testing new materials, Engineering order E-2, however it really is not applicable to newly manufactured products intended for general service/chemical applications such as pipe flange gaskets. Therefore we do not recommend using our process units as testing facilities for general service gaskets. Instead, we recommend Head Office coordinate a testing program fctr new materials intended for general services. We will continue to test gaskets for specific service problems. LGH/lc cc: V. M. D. LEE - ASSOCIATE BUYER - PURCHASING SUBJECT: D.P.M.C.'S GASKET REQUIREMENTS FOR BLANKET ORDERS It is my intent to rebid the D.P.M.C.'s gasket requirements for blanket orders. This includes (1) heat exchanger gaskets (metal and jacketed), (2) spiral wound (API-601), (3) composition cut rings and sheet, (A) API rings (RTJ), and (5) teflon envelope gaskets (white teflon wiJLh insert of garlock 900 and compressed blue af.r-in^n ashpstn.<;') _ ~ Our current annual expenditure for this commodity group is approximately $525M. Flexitallic, Lamons and Sepco are Houston area approved shops for metal and jacketed and spiral wound (API-601) gaskets. These shops can also provide composition cut gaskets and sheet, teflon envelope gaskets, and API (RTJ) rings. D.P.M.C. is currently using JM-70C cut ring gaskets and sheet. Other head office approved manufacturers are (1) Anchor Tauril, (2) Durabla, (3) Garlocks 7021, (A) Nicolet 295, and (5) Raybestos Manhattan 503. Please advise me if Klinger (a manufacturer of composition sheet) is approved for D.P.M.C.'s use. Also, advise me the current status on the continued use of asbestos vs. non-asbestos gasket materials. These materials affect all types of the above mentioned gaskets except all-metal and API (RTJ) rings. If.^ non-asbestos is the required material for any or all of these gaskets; I need the names of approved manufacturers and I.D. numbers.
