Ares(2024)2812681 -Out of scope -- From: @bves.de> Sent: Tuesday, April 16, 2024 10:50 AM To: -----ec.europa.eu> Subject: BVES - PFAS & Energy Storage - Meeting Inquiry May 2024 (ENV) ------ Dear Dear PFAS play a central role in the energy sector, including energy storage systems. PFAS are widely used in battery cells as well as in membranes for electrolyzers and flow batteries, and for example in components of wind turbines and PV modules. The BVES Energy Storage Systems Association represents over 300 companies in the energy storage sector for electricity, heat and mobility in the residential, industrial, commercial and utility markets. We are committed to ensuring that the protection of people and the environment from harmful substances is a top priority. Replacing PFAS compounds with harmless alternatives in the short and medium term is the right way to go. However, in the field of energy storage, it will take more time before technically viable and marketable alternatives are available for all applications. Although alternatives are already on the way and are likely to be available in a few years' time. At present, there is a lack of accurate data on long-term performance, i.e. durability, and therefore on the real costs of alternative products. We would be grateful for your assessment in this regard. We would like to discuss the upcoming PFAS ban and the current status with you, as we see a significant change and risks for our industries and the competitiveness of EU Member States for these crucial energy transition technologies. An overview of the PFAS substances currently most used in the energy (storage) sector, as well as our concerns and associated recommendations to minimise PFAS emissions while enabling the energy transition and competitiveness are set out in the attached position paper, which we would like to discuss with you and offer our expertise. It would be a real pleasure for us to visit you in Brussels. If you are interested, I would be happy to make an appointment with your office. As things stand at present, it would be possible to arrange a meeting, for example, on 6/7 May 2024, which our , Hager Group, could also accompany. I look forward to your reply.
