Simpson: I agree with you that the report of the I'etropolitan-Life Insurance Company on their survey of dust conditions at the L'anheim plant is unfavorable, and I have thoroughly discussed the matter with our men here. 7fe have decided to go ahead with the Preparing Room first and within the next few weeks we will be making improvements in this department. The Card Room, which is a bigger and more expensive job, will come "later. Some of the data in the report is rather difficult to under stand. For instance, in the Spooling and Twisting Departments they report 15.35 million particles per cubic foot in 1935 as against 2.35 million particles in 1930. There were no hoods or direct ventilletion on these machines either in 1930 or in 1935 and it' hardly seems plausable that minor changes in the mixes which occurred between .these periods could have Recounted for the.large difference in dust count. However, regardless of whether or not these figures accurately reflect the true conditions, we are convinced that improvements in the dust exhaust system should.be made and we are going ahead with them. T/hile I am in England I expect to get complete data on Twiner Brothers' experience with the idea that some of this data in conjunction with our experience at Charleston may help us get the best and least expensive way of solving our problem.
