Dr. Kehoe" has made a series of observations on ocean-going tank ships, and he has found that sludge in significant quantities is quite rare and that the lead hazard is not serious. His information, however, on barges of the type used in harbors and inland waterways is quite scanty. Dr. Kehoe is anxious to determine whether or not this type of barge collects appreciable quantities of sludge, and if so, the nature of such deposits. Until further notice, therefore, whenever it is possbile for one of your men to collect such a sample, he should do so and send it in a clean mason jar, with a glass top, to Dr. Kehoe at Cincinnati for analysis. The Kettering Laboratory will notify us when they have received sufficient samples, and tiie program will then be discontinued. Samples of this kind can probably be obtained with the as sistance of our customers, through barge companies, and especially through drydock companies that make a business of cleaning and re pairing carriers of this kind. Letter of transmittal should accompany each sample, giving: (1) Name of barge owner or operator. (2) Name of barge. (3) Size of compartment from which sample is collected. (4) Description of compartment service. (a) Leaded gasoline only. ' (b) Various products.
