S. K. F ried lan d er. Am.L-.ri.Hyg. A ssn. J. 25, 37-42 (Jan ..F eb . 1964). Using dim ensional analysis, an expression is derived for the dependence of the particle rem oval efficiency of the lower lung on the particle diffusion coefficient, the tim e per breath and param eters related to the structure of the lung. The analysis is lim ited to p articles sm aller than a few tenths of a m icron in diam eter, tor which diffusion is the controlling m echanism of rem oval. It is not necessary to assum e a special m odel for the structu re of the lung. The analysis can be used to co rrelate and extrapolate experim ental data; it can also be used to predict the size of the larg est particle which is (alm ost) com pletely rem oved in the respiratory region. -- A uthor's abst. 484 A sbestos Exposure and Neoplasia. I.J . Selikoff, J. Churg, and E.C.H am m ond. J.A m . Med. A ssn. 188, 22-26 (April 6, 1964). Building trades insulation w orkers have relatively light, interm ittent, exposure to asbestos. Of 632 insulation w o rk ers, who entered the trade before 1943 and w ere traced through 1962, 45 died of cancer of the lung or pleura, w h ere as only 6.6 such deaths w ere expected. Three of the pleural tum ors were m eso theliom as; there was also one peritoneal m esotheliom a. Four m esotheliom as in a total of 255 deaths is an exceedingly high incidence for such a rare tum or. In addition, an unexpectedly large num ber of m en died of cancer of the stom ach, colon, or rectum (29 com pared with 9.4 expected). O ther cancers w ere not in c re a se d ; 2 0 .5 w ere ex p ected , 21 o c c u rre d . T w elve m en died of a s b e s to s is. -- Authors' abst. PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF THE ENVIRONMENT 485 Chronic Skeletal Changes in D ivers. P .C . A lnor. Bruns B eitr. Klin. C hir. 207, 475 (Dec. 1963). Based on follow -up exam ination of 131 d iv e rs, new ideas about the orgin and developm ent of chronic injuries of the skeletal system w ere gained Among the 131 d iv e rs , th e re w ere 72 pathological findings in the skeleton which in 15 of them w ere m onostotic, and in 57 polyostotic. In e head of the hum erus was the m ost prom inent site of lesion, w hereas in caisson w orkers the head of the fe- m u ris is m ost frequently involved. In a group of 65 d iv e rs, who w ere followed up for m ore than a decade, 43 had skeletal changes. Of these, 26 had no sym ptom s. Of the 17 who had co m p lain ts, 7 w ere w ithout lo s s of function, 3 had a lo ss of fu n ctio n , and 7 w ere incapable to work in their occupation. The role that diver's accidents play in the developm ent of skeletal changes is discussed. The ra re occurrence of spontaneous bends resulted in skeletal injuries in m ore than half of the cases. It is concluded that typical skeletal changes may develop at any tim e, even a long tim e after the diver stopped w orking, and also, when he had never experienced accidents or bends. - - J .A m .
