DATE SUBJECT May 1, 1984 Acid/Alkali Sewer Balance Since the mid to late 1970's, a number of weak acid recovery projects have been implemented in Plant B to reduce acid to the sewer. About six months ago, an 018 sewer balance calculation sheet was prepared for use by the shift supervisors to measure and control acid and alkali flows to the sewer from Plant B and Plant C. Based on input from those sheets, it is apparent that there still remains room for further improvement. A potential savings of up to $1.5 MM ($65,000/yr for each ton of acid and alkali) is available. If P-3031 - "Anhydrous HC1 for Hall Chemical" gels, both P-506, "Recovery of Per-Tri Phase Acid", and M-9430, "Acid/Alkali Balance for the Complex Sewer", must be given high priority and reassigned to address this remaining savings potential. /vem cc: R.
