Nielsen March 26, 1990 TRIP REPORT; BIOREMEDIATION SAMPLING AT LCCP 3/20/90 - 3/23/90 Sampling Update As of late Friday (3/23/90), sampling was completed by Quaternary Resource Incorporated (QRI) of the north and south stormwater diversion ponds (SWDP). We found that the sludge on the north SWDP varied from 1 - 2 feet. The south SWDP showed from 0 - 27" sludge. Most locations had 12 - 18" sludge. The clay was firm but in places a transition layer of sludge and clay was noted. Sampling of the south lagoon started on Friday afternoon. Because the sludge in the lagoons was much "looser" than expected and there was no clay on the bottom, QRI was having difficulties keeping the sample in the pipe sampler. As I left on Friday, they were driving back to Baton Rouge to get a new piece of equipment to sample the lagoons. They guaranteed that sampling will be completed by Sunday night (3/25/90). As of Monday (3/26/90) sampling was still continuing. Analytical Update All samples taken from the SWDP are delivered to American and analyses has started. We are concerned about American because their driver who showed up Wednesday night was drinking. He was fired, but it makes me nervous. Bioremediation Schedule Update Samples done by 3/28/90 Analyses done by 4/2/90 (data faxed to R&D by 4/2/90) "Swampbuggy" treatment starts - 3/26/90. Swampbuggy treatment of north an south lagoons will go from 3/26/90 - 4/6/90. Review effectiveness of "swampbuggy" treatment on 4/10/90 If effective, "swampbuggy" treatment of SWDP's will continue. If "swampbuggy" treatment is not effective, RETEC will initiate bioremediation of SWDP's. Other Issues Raised in RETEC/Vista Meetings Carrico is still convinced that Vista can do the bioremediation for less than $20/cubic yard. Watson and Nielsen are pushing hard to have 1-2 people (preferably RETEC) on hand, full time, for the duration of the project to monitor the equipment and keep the system optimized for stripping and bioremediation. This may conflict with Carrico's wishes to reduce costs. Carrico is pushing McClain and Hayes to find out definitely if there are any other hazardous components in the impoundments which Vista is not aware of, i.e. any other data we have not seen, and if Vista needs permission from LDEQ to proceed. Action Steps Arising from Vista/RETEC Meetings T. R. Bell is doing a check-out of mechanical state of the current aerators. T. R. Bell is setting up schedule with VCM lab to do benzene analyses on water and sludge during swampbuggy SWDP treatment. T. R. Bell is getting oils which will go into SWDP after TC streams are in ASU and exam project is completed. These oils will be analyzed for the entire hazardous waste analysis. A. M. Nielsen to provide T. R. Beil with a procedure for analyzing D.O. in waters and sludges. A. M. Nielsen to evaluate the theoretical basis of concern raised by plant that as the lagoon sludge is stirred up, ammonia will be released from the anaerobic sludge and cause problems in the effluent.
