Attached are the results of asbestos exposure monitoring for two days at the Institute Plant while removing asbestos on a 3-inch steam line at the #3 dock area. The line stripped was located on risers and an overhead piperack extending across the railroad tracks. Glovebags and enclosures were not used because it was not feasible according to the Construction Department M insulation craft representative (Asbestos Competent Person) and the 512 Plant Industrial Hygiene Department. Employees used a powered man-basket to reach lines that were overhead. Area was barricaded until removal of asbestos was completed. Two out of six personal exposure samples exceeded the 0.2 fiber/cc permissible exposure level standard and three other personal exposure samples exceeded the 0.1 fiber/cc action level standard. We encourage you to use supplied air respirators as much as possible in the asbestos abatement procedure. Employees wore two pair of coveralls, headcovers, boots, gloves and A0 R57-A half-face HEPA cartridge respirators. No street clothes were worn.
