No. 438, November 29, 1962 NEW PAINT PLANT IN PHILIPPINES National Lead Company(Philippines), Inc. has started operations at its new paint plant at Mikati, Rizal in the Republic of the Philippines. Opening ceremonies held on October 5 were attended by representatives of the Philippine Government., community, civic and industrial leaders as well as representatives of the parent companies from the United States. Located on a three acre site near Manila, the new plant includes a two-story main factory building which also contains administrative and laboratory facilities. A cafeteria and extensive storage areas are pro vided for in an adjourning building. This new plant will substantially increase production capacity arid will provide adequate supplies of paint, lacquer and waxes for the expanding Philippine markets. National Lead Company(Philippines), Inc., a subsidiary of National Lead Company and Connell Bros. Company Ltd., has been engaged in the manufacture of paint in the Philippines since 1954. TAYLOR EXPANDS KENTUCKY PLANT The Chas. Taylor Sons Co. is now producing dense zircon refrac tories in a new building at its Taylor, Kentucky, plant. Production of these materials, which are used chiefly by manufacturers of glass fibers and containers, flat glass, and chemical glassware, has been transferred from the Cincinnati plant to streamline the operation and step up pro duction capacity to meet increasing demands. The 29,000 square foot single story building is constructed of steel frame with asbestos siding .and roof and reinforced concrete floor. Modern equipment includes batch mixer, constant temperature room dryer, car-bottom kilns and finishing grinding facilities. CHANGE IN MATCHING GIFTS PROGRAM The National Lead Foundation, Inc. has modified its program for matching employee gifts to accredited educational institutions by increa sing the maximum amount of contributions per employee per year from $1,000 to $2,500. DIEHLMAN TO RETIRE AT YEAR END ^ George Diehlman, manager of pigments and chemicals division of the Atlantic Branch will retire at the end of the year after completing 47 years of service. He began his Company career in 1915 in the analytical department of the Brooklyn Research Laboratories and later specialized in research work on lead oxides and metal protective coatings. In 1949 he was named sales promotion manager for metal protective pigments and paints with headquarters at Brooklyn. In 1954 he transferred to the Atlantic - over - 0000-NLI-000024771 PUBLIC RE. Mr. Diehlman attended Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and Pratt Institute. He served for many years on various technical committees of the American Society for Testing and Materials and New York Society for Paint Technology. He is member of National Association of Corrosion Engi neers and New York Paint, Varnish and Lacquer. Association. KLEIN TO SUCCEED DIEHLMAN William R. Klein, Jr. will succeed George Diehlman as manager of pigments and chemicals division of the Atlantic Branch as of January 1, 1963. Mr. Klein was employed by the Company in 19^8 as a sales repre sentative for the pigments and chemicals division of the Altantic Branch. He was graduated from Colgate University in 19^2 and subsequent to gradu ation, served with the United States Air Force for four years on overseas duty. MINING ENGINEERS ELECT COLE Sandford S. Cole, assistant manager of research. Technical Department, Titanium Division, Sayreville, has been named president elect of the Society of Mining Engineers.. He will take office in February, 1963 in Dallas, during the annual meeting of American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. He has also been elected to the AIME board of directors for a three year term. SHIFT CALENDAR WINS AWARD Titanium Division's St. Louis plant 1962 shift calendar which highlighted the Company's suggestion system and encouraged TITANOX-ers to submit daily suggestions was singled out for an award at the 19&2 Annual Convention of the National Association of Suggestion Systems in New York City. Selected as a winner in the class of individual promo tional pieces for plants employing less than 3,000 employees the honor award plaque was presented to the Titanium Division. SAFETY NOTE The Hoyt Plant of the St. Louis Branch at Granite City, Illinois, has gone five years and two million man hours without incurring a lost time accident.
