Box 1333 Chicago, Illinois 60690 .. Dear Harold: As you 'know, we had a number of projects under way at Victor where we were working directly with Vince Labrecque. The follow ing are those that should be considered in an active stage and with some degree of priority. '(a) 232 Anti-Stick. . The current project involves the use of your base coating N9g-54 which we would apply on the paper machine. There has been some problem involving viscosity as we apply it, and we have been given the thickener to control viscosity for our needs. However, in a brief discussion with John Zeitz, he indicated some question as to whether or not this coating is adaptable to aluminum and also a questionable shelf life. John is conducting tests at this time in re spect to the performance of N9g-54. Whatever the outcome of these tests, I.am quite certain we . will want to continue work on this project to provide you anti-stick coated material in roll form. (b) 958 with better sealability. Vince had asked us if we could improve sealability proper ties, and a certain amount of work has been done by Dick Foster, of our Technical Department. On January 6, 1977, .Stoughton Ellsworth, in a letter to Vince, forwarded samples VPD-189-0000964 fir. Harold G. North, Purch. Mgr. At the same time, he forwarded a sample representing standard production from Lot 1-6397-2. At the time of our visit of January 19th, this material had not been checked out. (c) Viton, our 205-63. Because of the very high cost of Viton, development work has been limited to hand sheet samples. We have just finished construction of a 22" diameter hand mold, which will allow us significantly larger sample material than from our pre vious equipment. Jim Ulrich has requested more samples of 1/32" Viton, 5-1/2" x 13". These samples should be in Jim's hands very shortly. . '' > (d) Substitute for asbestos. .- . Vince brought up the need for a study and program to suggest . substitute fibers for asbestos. At the time of our meeting on January 19th, Dick Foster told Vince that we already had a general long range program under way involving various synthetic and cellulose properties. The 22" diameter hand mold should enable Dick Foster to pro vide hand samples of various fiber furnishes that will allow you to check for performance properties. We should be supplying you preliminary samples in the very near future. (e) As a general objective, we are working to provide you a more finished material off the paper machine in-terms of anti stick and adhesive coatings. VICTOCOR gauge, at this time. A purchase order is to be issued by Chicago plant for parts- to be made in December, for .022*' VICTOPAC 959 facing to be run. By 1982, hope to have 30/ of parts converted' to asbestos-free. The second generation material, looks- good in lab tests plain and combined. Moving into engine testing - just vehicular per R. Kozerski. No purchase order is to be issued at present for various gauges of 2nd generation material run; this is in future. ' Dick- Foster is looking at new antioxidants for further improvements. 2. Asbestos-free black SQLICOR facing VICTOPAC 939 We have.received two rolls of .012" and tests are in progress. But it is gray, not black. Per R. Foster, this is due to using a different type of carbon black which is sulfurless and will be needed in sulfurfree products; so they are working with this for other purposes too. They will achieve a darker color in future runs. We are using a thin facing and thick core to reduce relaxation. "Samele orders to be made. 3. Asbestos-free gray soft packing low density VICTOPAC 229 Some existing'material from stock has been shipped to Robinson; this material at H&V1s own R&D expense; no charge to VICTOR. New material to be run in various gauges will cost H&V about $4000 per gauge; they intend to split the cost.with VICTOR and charge us 32000 per gauge. 4 Asbestos-free .gray soft -packing medium density VICTOPAC 239 Existing material from stock is at H&V's own R&D-expense; no charge to VICTOR. K&V ran three gauges for Cummins just before shutdown at cost of 34QOO per gauge; to split cost with VICTOR and charge us. $2000 per gauge. . .. Caterpillar desires material with compressibility aim 25% (range 20-30) instead of current aim 20% (range 13-23). H&V made a trial run in .047" and .062"; samples left with us for testing and submission to D. Counsil. It has some hard spots due to equipment problem. Rolls run as part of order for Robinson.
