On-the-Job Safety
Du Pont and CPPC forces achieved a frequency rate of .141
injuries per 200,000 hours worxed in 1383. This compares with rates of .035 in 1982 and .077 in 1981. Nine LnC injuries were experienced.

Spruance Brown 6 Root A structural
ironworker helper received multiple fractures to his right great toe and a simple fracture to his right second toe when an approx. 4C0 lb. louver counterweight fell across tne toes of his right foot; he was not wearing safety shoes.
July 8
Savannah River - Miller Dunn Electrical Company - An electrician was installing conduit above a
duct. He climbed on top of the duct to get a better working position. His foot slipped off of the angle iron duct support and he stepped
on a section of sheet metal duct causing it to break away. He fell 12 feet to the bottom of the duct. He suffered a compressed fracture of
the vertebrae.
July 12 (3) Pontchartrain - Payne 8 Keller - A cement finisher, a laborer and a layout carpenter were doing finishing work in the DCB area. There
was an explosion and flash fire. All three were hospitalized with burns. The cement
finisher had second and third degree bums over 60 percent of his body. The laborer had second degree burns over *0 percent of his body. The layout carpenter bad second degree burns over 30 percent of his body.
Sept. 24
Memphis B. F. Shaw - A boilermaker, working in a drying tower, stepped on a 5/8" plywood
hole cover which gave way and he fell 17 ft. He suffered a fracture to his left foot and multiple contusions and lacerations.
Oct. 19
May Plant - Daniel Construction - A sheetmetal
welder was pulling a large work table on
casters when the heel of his right foot was caught and wedged between a leg support and the concrete floor. He suffered an evulsion fracture of the interior talus of the right
foot.
Oct. 25
Cooper River * Daniel Construction - A millwright was lifting a block of steel weighing approximately 155 lbs to a shop table when his back "popped". He suffered severe back strain with possible disc involvement. (Reclassified March 1984.)
Nov. 21
Savannah River - Du Pont * A laborer stepped on his own shoe lace and tripped falling against a
bench in the Change House. He suffered four fractured ribs and a collapsed lung, ot/p 3913909

C. Restricted Workday Cases
In 1983 the Division experienced 26 restricted workday cases for an RWC frequency rate of .407 versus .400 in 1982. There was a ratio of 3.25 RWC injuries for every LWC, while in 1982 there was a ratio of 11.3 to 1.
D. Insurance
Workers' Compensation cost per nan-hour increased fron $.067 in 1982 to $.104 in 1983.
General liability activity was up with eleven suits filed versus six in 1982. Total demand was $31MM with six (6) unspecified.
Workers' Compensation losses for fiscal year ending
September 30, 1983 were $791,112 down from $885,358 in
1982. Premiums generated were $2,487,844 versus $4,446,022 in 1982. Loss ratio for the division was 31.8% up from 18.2% in 1982.
