The interior as well as the exterior illus trate the skill the early craftsmen had attained in creating the fully developed charm of the colonial mansion. This magnificent example of early American architecture re tains all its original beauty with pure white lead and oil T AN early date in American history, Portsmouth A^ N. H., took its place as one of New England's most important and prosperous seaports. An excellent natural harbor at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, a fertile country-side and a seemingly inexhaustible sup ply of timber were the contributing factors in its early development and rise to importance. From Colonial Days to the early part of the nineteenth century, this de velopment was continuous and rapid. Clipper trade with the far east and Europe was at its height: ship owners and traders sometimes became wealthy over-night and with this new found prosperity they built mansions. For tunately, many of these beautiful colonial homes of Portsmouth remain in excellent condition today. It is no accident that has allowed these early colonial mansions to remain for so many years in good condition. They were framed with tremendous oak beams of a strength sometimes far exceeding the structural need. Also, the exterior refinement of architectural detail has been protected from the rigorous New England winters by pure white lead and oil paint. Because the majority of Colonial Portsmouth homes have been painted peri odically with pure white lead paint for the best part of two centuries, these homes today present a beautiful fresh surface free from any paint failure. The John Paul Jones House, built about 1759 by Captain Gregory Purcell. After the death of Captain Purcell, his widow ran a boarding house in which Captain John Paul Jones is believed to have spent the happiest years of his life while he was studying naval theory. Today the house is a public museum owned by the Portsmouth Historical Society. A Brownlow, vice president of the Denver Housing Authority, tells clearly from a naturally informed source the benefits derived from lead in modern plumbing. It refers to Lin coln Park Homes, built under the aus pices of the United States and Denver Housing Authorities, a $3,500,000 project with a plumbing and heating contract totaling $232,000. In his letter Mr. Brownlow says. "This is a lead and soil job. The lead bears the Lead Industries' Seal of Ap proval. ... I cannot speak too highly of the materials being used or the workmanship displayed on this job. There is little that could be added to this analysis of lead's part in plumb ing. The amount of lead used in the project bears out the fact that the writ ten opinions of Mr. Brownlow are put in practice and not merely theoretical. Whiteley supervising the job. Churches - East and West - Rely on White Lead LTHOUGH the Lutheran St. A^ Paulus Church of San Fran cisco, Cal., and the First Church of Christ. Longmeadow, Mass., represent two widely different architectural types on opposite coasts, nevertheless the same careful attention has been paid to their painting, a good practice for which all churches all over the country are noted. Built in 1892, the Lutheran St. Paulus church exemplifies the Gothic type of architecture generally associ ated with European cathedrals. Elab orate systems of arches and windows are set off by ornate wood trim. Sidewalls are of smooth-finished, matched weatherboarding, while the founda tion and lower walls are constructed of brick. The recent painting of the church was done with white lead, the church fathers having learned a bitter lesson in painting practice since the previous painting had been done with inefficient material. Naturally, the re sult was that the whole structure had to have the failed paint job burned off before repainting with time-tested white lead. Confidence has been ex pressed by' those connected with this job that now there will be no further difficulties. Built in 1768, it is regarded as one of the best examples of Colonial church architec ture. Its long history starts with Ste phen Williams, the celebrated boycaptive of the Indians, who later be came the first pastor of the church. Through the years this church has watched the nation's growth and for years to come its charm and historical significance will be preserved by the pure white lead paint protecting it. Once again, the importance of the priming coat is evident. One church has had its unfortunate experience. In the other, the Longmeadow church, from 1768 up to the present, all rec ords indicate that pure white lead and oil has been the only paint used on this structure. Assuming that it has been regularly painted throughout its life, the original white lead priming coat is still adhering to the wood. The excellent condition of the church to day after 170 years is testimony to the success inherent with a pure white lead paint program, regardless of location. This is a water The Skillern installation comprises a pit 54 ft. 9 in. long and 7 ft. 6 in. wide, completely lined with 4-lb. sheet lead turned up around the edges to form a leakproof pan. All seams in the pan were lead burned. The lead was laid over old concrete which had been ground smooth with a terrazzo machine. The lead was coated with asphaltum to protect it against the free lime in green cement, and a new con crete floor poured on top of the lead. Duck boards are used on top of this concrete in the usual manner. The pan and floor are graded to the drains so that any moisture collecting under the concrete will drain from the pan. No matter whether a shower pan. a refrigerator pan, or the lining for an entire room, sheet lead makes a quick, neat, highly efficient and economical waterproofing. Flexibility of the sheet lead takes up any building movement or settlement and the pan fits snugly [6] *-*425634 against the underflooring; this elim inates the danger of void spaces under neath which may result in cracked flooring and leaks when the finished floor is laid and walked on. For waterproofing pans 4-lb., 6-lb.. or 8-lb. sheet lead should be used with seams preferably lead burned, al though they may be soldered if neces sary. Sheets may be as large as can be conveniently handled. Lead sleeves burned to the pan, or flashings, should be provided around pipes passing through the floor and pan to make these joints perfectly watertight.
