MONITORING RESULTS ON VINYL CHLORIDE MONOMER (VCM) - B/414
SUMMARY
Twenty--two of twenty-four samples for VCM were Below 0.5 ppm, the "Action Level." One sample was above 0.5 ppm, the "Action Level." sample was over the 8 hour TLV of 1.0 ppm.

DISCUSSION
On September 13, 14, 15, 26, 27> and 28, 1988, twenty-four personal samples were taken in Building 414, the Mass Poly Area, the Hydrin Star-Rite Pilot Plant, the Latex Loop Reactor Area, the 55-Liter Area and the Dispersion Pilot Plant to measure the operators exposure levels to VCM.
The Vinyl*Chloride OSHA Standard 1910.1017 states that the Permissible Exposure Limit for employees shall not be exposed to vinyl chloride at concentrations greater than 1 ppm averaged over an 8-hour period nor at concentrations greater than 5 ppm averaged over 15 minutes. Also, no employee may be exposed to vinyl chloride by direct contact with liquid vinyl chloride.
The sampling results were obtained by means of a Mini Monitor called a Relszner Badge. The Rel^zner Badge is two Inches In diameter and a quarter inch thick. The hadge weighs 35 grams and contains 1.35-gram loadings of the Reiszner activated coconut-based charcoal to collect the VCM. The badge is easily placed near the breathing zone without restricting the movements of the wearer.
The VCM analysis was performed in the Brecksville Department 8506 Lab. The attached data sheets show the results.
