M, Barnhart Johns-Manville Sales Corp, Sumner Rider & Assoc, Sumner Rider Sc Assoc, National Insulation Mfrs, Assn, National Insulation Mfrs, Assn, CLARIFICATION OF LOWER TEMPERATURE LIMIT TO BE USED BY NIMA FOR PUBLICATION PURPOSES Discussion on this subject resulted in unanimous opinion of the Sub-Committee that: 1, No lower temperature limit should be specified, but that an expression such as "for use up to 1900 F" should be used, 2, All low temperature applications for the type of mineral products manufactured by the Association membership, as well as the high temperature applications, should be included, 3, This subject should be referred back to the Executive Committee for final decision. 2 ROUND-ROBIN THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY QUESTIONNAIRE It was reported that 11 replies to the Questionnaire had been received by the Association office and that all were in favor of calibrating their conductivity equipment. It was recommended that a special committee be formed for the purpose of determining how this program should be conducted. The special committee will consist of the 3 T k R Sub-committee Chairmen plus other representa tives of NIMA membership that are responsible for testing methods within their own company* REVISION TO TABLE I, CHAPTER 32, ASHRAE ''GUIDE**1 * * 4 5 * 7 8 9 With respect to Table I, the following recommendations were made: 1, Include "Design Values for Mean Temperature Indicated" in the sub-title. 2* Use 50F and 75F for the mean temperatures for "k" values, rather than the 40 F and 70 F now used. 3* In the description of the products under "Form" use "Blankets and Felts" rather than the term "Blankets" now used, 4. Where the term or terms "asphalt" or "resin" appear, substitute the words "organic bonded", 5. Under "Blankets and Felts" the word "Blanket" should precede "Metal Reinforced". No changes were made in the temperature limit, density or "k" values for this product. 6* Under "Felt - Semi-Rigid Type" add the words "organic bonded". Temperature limit was changed to 400 F, the density range was changed 3-8 Ib/cu ft. The "k" values will be circulated for approval* 7, Under "Blocks & Boards" "Mineral Wool" " Low Temp. ", the temperature limit was changed to 250 F. The density and "k" values were not changed. 8, Under "Blocks & Boards", "High Temp" (with inorganic binder), the temperature limit was changed to 1800 F, the density was not changed. Under "Pipe Insulation", "High Temp. ", "Blanket-Type" (Metal Reinforced), the temperature limit and density were not changed. The "k" was changed to 0, 35 at 200 F, 11. Under "Insulating Cement", "Mineral Wool" (with colloidal clay binder), the temperature limit and density were not changed. The "k" values will be circulated for approval. 12. The mineral wool hydraulic-setting cement will be included. The values for temperature limit, density and "k" values will be cir culated for approval, REVISIONS TO HH-I-564 It was agreed that a letter should be written to the General Services Administration requesting deletion of the water vapor absorption require ment as well as the test method for this requirement. This subject will be placed on the Agenda for the next meeting, REVISIONS TO ASTM SPECI FICATIONS 1. ASTM C-300, Mineral Wool Molded-Type Pipe. Insulation for Low Temperatures Each Committee membeaswas requested to register a vote relative to changing the wording of the cluase on "Workmanship" that appears in the specification* 2. ASTM G-262, Mineral Wool Batt Insulation The Committee members will be asked to consider the deletion of this specification. ' 3. ASTM C-280, Mfiasral Wool Blanket-Type Pipe Insulation The Committee members will be asked to consider the deletion of this specification. 4. ASTM C-263 Mineral Wool Blanket Insulation, Metal-Mesh Covered In addition to the changes that were agreed upon at the Sub-committee meeting on May26, 1959, the following specific items were discussed { REVISIONS TO ASTM SPECIFICATIONS (cont'd) and agreed upon: 4 (a) The scope should include a temperature limit of 1200 F, (b) Change paragraph 2 to read Blanket Insulation (Metal-Mesh Covered) ---------------------------- , (c) In paragraph 6(b), delete the second sentence starting "When an insulating cement----- --------n, (d) Delete paragraph 6(c). (e) Change paragraph 7(2) to include a minus tolerance of 1/8" and an excess in all dimensions will be permitted, (f) Paragraph 7(d) shall be revised to include the following "k" values: Mean Temp. 200 F 300 F 400 F 500 F MkM 0,41 0.47 0.53 0. 61 BASIS OF CALCULATING HEAT LOSSES It was agreed that it was a desirable objective of NIMA to be able to calculate heat losses on a common basis. However, it was thought that the cost of changing individual company literature would be a factor in deterring this subject to a later date. NOMENCLATURE This subject will be placed on the next meeting Agenda. SAMPLING AND MDONG CEMENTS - ASTM Mr, Barnhart was asked to write the Chairman of Sub-committee S-IU, ASTM Committee C-16, and ask that revisions to ASTM C-163, Sampling and Mixing Thermal Insulating Cement be considered ) ' ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
