BID SPECIFICATIONS FOR HAND CLEANING AND PAINTING NO. 1 CRUDE UNIT Coastal States Petrochemical Company Corpus Christi, Texas January, 1968 CED0005886 SCOPE OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED / Hand clean, prime and paint No. ) Crude Unit as outlined in red on Drawing, All new pipe or materials, after being properly cleaned, shall receive two prime coats and two finish coats of paints as set out in the specification for the particular items. Subject: Surface preparation and coating specification for Crude Unit #%. I A. Surface Preparation Remove all grease and oil with detergent solution (one pound Sodium Meta Silica per five gallons of water). No sand blasting can take place in these units due to sand contamination and fire hazard. All of the cleaning shall be done with Wire brush and scrapers. Clean thoroughly. Where bare metal is exposed, these surfaces shall be pretreated with Briner' if2215 Prepaint or equal. a. Mix Prepaint as follows: ~~ 4 parts water 1 part Prepaint Under no circumstance should this mixture vary for use in these units. b. Apply a very wet coat to all bare steel. c. Do not paint over this until it is completely dry. This takes from 2 to 4 hours. All of the old Aluminum jacketing on piping will have to be washed down with the detergent solution. Crude Unit / B. Painting Specification (Priming) 1. All steel surface that is exposed shall be primed as follows: (ambient up to 250F.) a. One coat #2310 Durapon Red Chromate Primer or equal, 2\ mils dry. CED0005887 Page 2 b. One coat #2809 Durapon Green Chromate Primer or equal, 2 mils dry. * Spray or brush apply. * Thin with #69 Durapon Reducer at the rate of 1 pint thinner per gallon of primer. 2. Hot surfaces that exceed 250F. up to 650F. - Do not paint. 3. Aluminum surfaces, (old surfaces) a. One very thin coat of #2600 Vinyl Wash Primer or equal. * Mix one to one with #64 Reducer or equal. This is a diluent which reacts with the base, allow ing approximately 12 hours potlife. * Apply this coat so thin that it is transparent. (Finish Coats) - For all surfaces that are ambient up to 250F. Various colors are used throughout the refinery, and the selection for each particular piece of equipment will be rigidly followed. a. t#3526 Steel-Clad Turacotta or equal. Hand Rails Ladders Platforms Stanchions A-Frames b. #2581 Steel-Clad #30 Green or equal Small Vessels Footings Signs Pumps and Motors (ambient to 250F.) c. #2530 Steel-Clad #28 Green or equal All uninsulated piping d. #1337 Steel-Clad Chrome Polished Aluminum or equal Insulated piping Aluminum jacketing that has been primed CED0005888 Page 3 e. #2544 Steel-Clad Bright Red or equal Alarm boxes Fire fighting equipment f. #2977 Silicone Alkyd Gray Primer or equal I Hot Pumps and Engines (no additional paint needed on these surfaces). g. #2966 Silicone Alkyd Aluminum or equal Hot piping Hot valves Surfaces will be guaged for temperature, so that the excessively hot areas can be properly identified. Inspection will be made daily on the cleaning and surface preparation, as well as the painting. Note: All paints and coatings in this specification are produced by Briner Paint Company. An approved equal will be accepted when adjudged so by our Engineering Department. II. Safety.Precautions. If fire or explosion hazards are present, proper precautions shall be taken before any work is done. If the structure previously contained flammable materials, it should be purged of dangerous concentrations. Nozzle blast operators exposed to blast dust shall wear a U. S. Bureau of Mines approved helmet connected to a source of clean, compressed air. Filter-type air respirators should be worn by all others who are exposed to blast dust environment. Adequate protection for personnel from flying particles shall also be provided in any blasting operation. Safety goggles shall be worn by all persons near any blasting operation. Blast hose shall be grounded to dissipate static charges. III. Inspection. All work under this specification shall be subject to inspection by the owner or his representative. All parts of the work shall be accessible to the inspector. The contractor shall correct such work as is found defective under the specifications. If the contractor does agree with the inspector, the arbitration or settle ment procedure established in the contract, if any, shall be followed. If no arbitration or settlement procedure is established, the procedure specified by the American Arbitration Association shall be used. CED0005889 Page 4 IV.- APPLICABLE SPECIFICATIONS A. Contractor shall, at its sole cost and expense, furnish all necessary supervision, labor, tools, equipment, supplies, all expendable and/or consumable materials such as sand, motor oils, fuel and greases, etc., to perform all work herein specified. Coastal will furnish all paint material and thinners. It shall be the contractor's responsibility to notify Coastal 5 days prior to time material needed and the amount. B. Contractor shall provide proper supervision on job site at all times, including supervision by prime contractor for any subcontract work by others. V. GENERAL CONDITIONS A. Working hours shall be from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Coastal States holidays will be observed. B. Contractor to furnish portable sanitary facilities and drinking water for construction forces, if required. C. Coastal States shall have the right to effect changes in construction. Should changes be made, then the amount of payment or basis for payment shalLbe determined by Coastal States and the contractor prior to the starting of the work for which such change is made. D. INSURANCE Contractor shall provide and maintain, at his own expense and cost, with carriers acceptable to Coastal States, the following insurance, to be evidenced by Certificate of Insurance furnished to the company by the carriers: 1. Workmen's Compensation Insurance, including death coverage. 2. Public Liability and Property Damage Insurance on operations with minimum limits as follows: a. Bodily Injury-------------------------------- $100,000/$300,000 b. Property Damage----------------------------$50,000 on any one accident E. The contractor shall submit his bid to Attention: B. A. Paulson, Coastal States Petrochemical Company, P. O. Box 521, Corpus Christi, Texas 78403, not later than January 15, 1968. The quoted price shall include all remuneration required by contractor for required work. F. The contractor will comply with all Coastal States safety measures, etc G.
