Some days ago I wrote you enclosing a letter which 1 , had written to Mr. Kettering in which a tfehtaibive plan ' for expanding our research program was presented. I am very anxious to have a frank expression of your re action to that plan as soon as possible, because in the ' near future it will be necessary for me to decide definite ly on several matters related to our work during the coming year. For a number of reasons it will be necessary for me to curtail some of the experimental work; we are now doing, or make some arrangement for providing more space. ; 1 am going east in about ten days* and/at that time I expect to lay these matters before the President of the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation. I have every reason to believe that a way may be developed for continuing and enlarging ! upon certain phases of our experimental work. It may be : that you have thought that my suggestions required too much expenditure of time and money, and that you have not ; wished to engage in such an enterprise. In that case, I am risking the chance that you may misunderstand me in thinking that I am attempting thus to re-open the matter on a different scale. However, in not wishing to make an arrangement which might exclude the possibility of carry ing out 'work which you may still wish us to undertake, I am merely reciprocating the courtesy you have shown me ' Will you be good enough, therefore, to let me know at your earliest convenience what you think of the general terms of my proposal j and whether you wish to have us consider you In on a program which w shall soon map out for the year's work.
