"Lead" - The third 1958 issue of this quarterly was prepared for sailing to a list of sore than 50,000 people during the first week of October. Several thousand new names were added to the list since the last sailing. 2. "Lead and Its Allova" - This annual review of new developoents in re search. desipi and sanufacture of lead was prepared by E. J. Hullarkey, technical director, and appeared in the September issue of "Industrial and tagineerlng Chemistry." Reprints, when available, will be distributed to seobers end interac ted technical people. 3. Hrrlene Conference - The program end preperetlona for the Lead Hygiene Conference sponsored by L.I.A. to be held In Chicago In November were completed. Arrangements were also nu.de for printing the entire proceedinga in "Industrial Medicine and Surgery." Baaed on advance registrations it appears that at least 150 members and leaders in Industrial health will participate. 8, Red Lead Paints for Water Tanka - Efforts have continued to settle this controversy and an appropriaclon has been approved to carry a proportionate part of the cost of a field testing program to establish the safety of using red lead for potable water tank interiors. Dr. H. B. Elkina is preparing a paper for possible publication by the American Water Works Association which should be ef fective in clearing up the controversy. 9. Health and Safety fiuVletlns - Two of these Bulletina were Issued to aambers during the quarter. 10. Heetinds - Manfred Bovdltch, Health and Safety Director, ettended a conference oa p.-ocautiocary labeling of the Ccocdttee on Toxicology of the Ameri can Medical Association, and a symposium at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. METALLIC LEAD PRODUCTS 11. Pse of Lead In Building - The report of this study wes received froo Ski&aore, Owinga end Morrill, architects and engineers. It is being circulated to the interested Association ccaaittses. 12. Ch-ri-el .T-ov - L.I.A. exhibited at the Notional Chemical Exposition held concurrent 1 witr. the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in Chicago in September. 13. Plumbers* Apprentice Contest - David M. Boreini, assist *nt to the sec retary, eerved as Judge of lead work for the fifth consecutive ye *r et the inter national apprenticeship contest sponsored by the plumbers* union and awarded sav ings bonds to the three bast lead workers. Hcmar S. Tetman, at the same time, con ducted a course in how to teach lead work for instructor* of apprentice classes. li.,, Sweet's Catalogs - Contracts have been renewed for two four-page in sertions in Sweet's Catalogs for architect* and light construction builder* for 1959. The layouts have been modernised somewhat and color added a* recommended by Skldbore, Owinga end Merrill, 15. Publicity - Two articles on lead contraction Joint* in concrete floors appeared in "Concrete Construction," August, 195, and "Plant Engineering," Sep tember, 1958. CERAMICS 16. Research - The ninth ana final graduat* research fellowship for th* academic year lvjS-1959 waa established. Turner, technical eerrlce, attended the fall meeting of the White Warea and Suppliers Divisions of A.C.3. LEAD PIGMENTS 19. Red lead Technical letter Wo. 13 - Thia Technical Letter, entitled "L.I.A. Formula 9-2, A Single Red Lead Primer for Rusted, Weathered or Hew Gelvanited Steel," waa iasued and sailed to our Hat of sane 11,000 paint sakera, uaera and apecifiera. 20. Steel Structuree Painting Council - Our consultant. Dr. L. L. Carrick, attended a meeting of the Council and its Research Cosrdtte*. 22. Wetting Additive - Tost panels for Research Project Bo. 26, which deals with various lead-pignentod paints with a new wetting additive added, were placed on exposure. Our technical paint representative, Owen F. Shobe, has brought thia new experimental product to the attention of many paint users and a nusber have been supplied with samples for making their own tests on highway and other struc tures. MISCELLANEOUS RESEARCH ACTIVITIES 23. Research Director - Ch Septeefcer 2nd, Dr. Schrade F. Radtke assumed the duties of Research Director for the Expanded Research Program of both Lead Indus tries Association and the American Zinc Institute. 24. Cable Sheathing - The Cable Sheathing Task Croup met at the plant of the John Robertson Company and saw the experimental continuous extrusion press in operstion on cocoon lead. The arsenical lead alloys will be tried early in Octo ber. J 25, Lead Alloy Research - A contract was signed with Arrour Research Foun dation for a one-year research program on lead alloys employing recently developed theories and techniques. 26, Technlcsl Steering Committee - This Committee and its subcommittees htve undor consideration a nunber of research proposals submitted by various re search organizations and re in the process of evaluating them. They include work on orpano lead compounds, reinforced lead and others. Research contracts will bs arranged when they have been thoroughly evaluated. Respectfully eubadtted.
