Privacy and quiet are essential to school environments, and the newly-conrtructed Thomas J. Lahey School in Greenlawa, N.Y. ia exemplary of fine planning displayd to meet this need.
Deaigned by Coco t Smith, of Hauppauge, Uve one-story building features chisten of classrooms aurrounding a central core, comprimed of adminiatrative offices, gymnaaium, and a combination auditor!um/cafeteria. Thia concept aervea to lend privacy to classrooms and teaching areaa.
Of especial benefit to teachers and studrnts has been the use of lead aa a sound barrier. In the area between the drop ceiling and root, the space between the partition track and ceiling l-beam sraa sealed with one-pound, 1/64-inch-thick lead, snapped around one- by three-inch wood strips which, in him, were wedged in place against the lower flange of an I-beam. The lower portion of the sheet lead wm sealed into the partition track and secured with 3/16-inch wood wedges. Sheet lead Joints were overlapped and taped. To pene trate pipes, conduits, and such, the lead sheet was slit and sealed srith tape.
The material also sraa used above the entrances to daaarooma and to completely soundproof an audiocnetric testing room used for pupil hearing prior to enrollment. Thia was done by covering all walla with one-pound sheet lead, held in place, again, srith one- by three-inch batten strips, on 12-irtch centers. The walla then were finbhed with an acoustical board srith aoundabsorbing glass fiber behind the board.

Inc., acous tical contractors, and advocate of lead aa a sound barrier, "When you consider the low installation costs and the high performance level of lead, you can then understand why we consistently recommend its use in criti cal are*. . ftlead ia inexpensive, pre dictable, and efficient."
