Y. f/ N 1935.01 LIA2Z296 aeeAcLadSadsdUlltiaue a* Foreword AN outstanding rod lead-zinc dust-iron oxide primer for galvanized (ted--a single primer for all galvanized surfaces whether rusted, weathered or treated newhas been developed as a result of field exposures and research work cooducted by the Red Lead Technical Committee of the Lead Industries Association. Throughout a full six yean of field investigations, LXA. formula 9-t, deecrfced in this Technical Letter, has performed exoeptiooally well, surpassing all of the other red lead-cootsjning formulations previously recommended for this use by the Com mittee and in addition, out-performing {rod-free primers generally recommended for galvanized surfaces. LXA. Formula fi-2 primer is ideally suited far maintenance painting of galvanized surfaces particularly where the coodition of the surface area to be painted mar vary from rusty to weathered to new. At bat a tingle primer is available which aria effectively protect galvanized surfaces against further deterioration regardless of their condition. It is effective as e primer in ooe or more coats either exposed to the weather or covered with a suitable finish ooet To insure good adhesion and to attain the most satisfactory protection with this primer on rusted galvanized surfaces, the corroded areas should be wire brushed to remove rust scale followed I y washing with dean mineral spirits. On new gal vanized steel, the surface should be allowed to weather far 3 to 8 months or, ff time dees not permit, the surface should be chemically pretreated. The Technical Committer has examined a number of commonly used protreatment procedures and found, for example, that treatments with copper sulphate, acetic ado, or hydrochloric add are ineffective. However, phosphate type treat ments effectively etch the zinc surface and greatly improve the adhesion of the paint Elm. Proprietary products of this type are generally available.
