The results of our analysis of the samples obtained at your plant on May 25 are listed be'lov.-. All samples were first dried to a constant weight at lOS'^C (~3-l/2 hrs.). They were then "ashed,'' dissolved in a mixture of acids, and analyzed for magnesium by atomic absorption. It has been assumed that the only significant source of magnesium is the asbestos. Within the precision of the sampling and analyses, it appears that all of the samples have the same asbestos content of^9 i 1. The lumps, at least on the basis of this very limited sample, arc not clumps of asbestos. The dry filler was also examined under the binocular microscope. It appeared to be very uniform. Mo lumps of any kind were observed in either the freshly opened material or in a sample that had been exposed overnight in a thin layer. The ,,mud" samples taken after 5 and 20 minutes of mixing v*ere examined when approximately a week old. No lumps whatsoever could be found. Similarly, an individual lump sample that had been placed in a vial immersed in e quantity of uniform "mud" had disappeared. X4CC3CT Mr. Harold Rigden 2- - June 5, 1972 On the basis of this evidence, it is our conclusion that the lumps are merely agglomerates of the dry filler that have not been completely wet out with the liquid ingredients. They are not aggregates of asbestos or agglomerates built around the very hygroscopic fungicide. The Material Safety Data sheets and the background information on asbestos that we discussed are enclosed. We hope you now have the "lump" problem pretty well under control.
