The discussion was centered around two letters, which are attached, written by AIA to both EPA and CPSC requesting a 120 day extension past the December 17, 1979 filing date for data which was to be supplied by the asbestos using industry. The reasons stated in the letters were that the compilation of data is voluminous and in large part confidential. Most corporations are reluctant to release their confidentail material unless certain prior determined safeguards were assured to protect confidentiality. The U.S. Chamber will write a letter similar to those written by AIA stressing the same reasons, but will word it as coming from a larger supportive corporate base. The AIA stated that their conversations in recent days with both EPA and CPSC indicated that they (EPA and DPSC) were in no position to issue any directives for at least 60 days due to the lack of support information. AIA further stated that ifc is more than likely that any new proposed regulation and information ruling would not be forthcoming until Spring at which time it would first be published in the Federal Register. The U.S. Chamber urged those attending who also were members of the Chemical Manufacturers Assn, to express to CMA the precedent setting aspects of this asbestos ruling, as it might affect CMA's membership in the future. It was decided that the U.S. Chamber would be the clearinghouse for the dissemination of information between interested associations and corporations so that all parties would be aware of separate or collective actions.
