The appointm ent, announced terday by C. M. C hester, chair: o f th e a sso c ia tio n 's ex ecu tiv e c m itte e an d ch a irm a n o f th e bo, o f General Poods Corporation in lin e w ith th e a sso c ia tio n 's m ove to extend health benefits developed in large m anufacturing establish m e n ts to sm a ller p la n ts w h ich hasiA no m edical service. ----- Dr. H eiser, who recently com pleted a three-m onths' European tour, studying industrial health conditions 'and m ethods, said yes terday that "despite the widespread action to reduce em ploye injury and illness, prelim inary studies show th at the sm aller Am erican in dustrial units have fallen behind in giving such care." "Authoritative surveys show that approxim ately 80 to 90 per cen t of the large industries give excellent m edical care and health supervision to their m en but the sm aller units w ith 300 em ployes or less have not felt able to give such care, although they account for one-quarter of the industrial population in the United S ta te s." T h e a sso c ia tio n 's co m m ittee on healthful w orking conditions will be perm anent. I t exp ects to a ssist 80,000 sm aller plants. "I believe w e can cut occupational diseases, illnesses and disabilities by one-half in two or three years," Dr. H eiser said. The com m ittee, headed by Frank Purnell, president of the Youngs town Sheet and Tube Company, will first set up a health dem onstration unit in a plant in or near N ew York City, Dr. H eiser revealed. The cam paign, which will be prim arily edu cational, will he extended through out the country. Dr. H eiser will be assisted by Dr. Donald M. Shafer, form erly asso ciated w ith the m edical departm ent of the Standard Oil Company of N ew Jersey. An advisory com m it tee w ill be headed by D r. W.
