PELTS AND PAPERS A successful plant trial was made of an SBR latex asbestos paper to meet a Victor Gaskets specification which is designed to replace a cement/asbestos millboard with paper in roll form. B. AUTOMOTIVE Molded Mastic Wheelhouse cover production at Joliet was begun on November 3 and has been proceeding satisfactorily since then. The molded parts have been used on the automotive production lines without any reported difficulty. Elimination of fiber glass breakdown by changes in recycling of the molten mastic has been partially successful. Test batches have been made using dacron fiber which withstands the mechanical pump action and also provides some improvement in low temperature physical properties. This approach will be pursued. Carpet Underlay Approximately 100 units of a special mastic sheet, surfaced on both sides with jute padding were made and subsequently laminated to the back of ilagee carpet where they were molded to a Fisher Body floor pan. Installations in the front and back seat areas were made at the GM assembly line in Linden, New Jersey. The trial was successful and there was considerable interest in this development by several of the GM representatives witnessing the production tests. These two units replace nine separate flat parts and offer better carpet fit with less labor. Modification of the GAF combination is being prepared by replacing the jute with Amberlite and/or urethane foam. Rust Preventative Mastic Two plant trial runs of special asphalt mastic, sound-attenuating membranes, surfaced with release paper, have been made and submitted to Fisher Body and Ford to evaluate for floor pan rust preventative and sound-attenuating properties. The two compositions are designed to be laid on the floor pan prior to the paint bake cycle where the heat will cause the mastic to confirm and bond to the floor pan. MICH08525
