I simply want to toll you how much I appreciate your efforts to produce a writing for use an connection with the hearing before Senator Muslsie's Committee. I am fully aware that your purpose was to assist Ethyl Corporation in presenting a true representation of the validity of its position in the natter at issue. Your handling of the relevant facts was so characterized by consideration for me and by a sensitive respect for the bettering Laboratory, as to put me in your debt. My only regret is that this proved to be "love's labour lost," lor which I owe you at least an acknowledgment. Jim Doudreau may have spoken to you about this, on my behalf, but I want to say to you, directly, that I was much pleased by what you did. The difficulty, from the viewpoint of its use or adaptation by the University, was that, in speaking for Itself, in your words, or in any words, the University was being placed - or so it seemed to several of our people in a somewhat defensive position, ft was thought that, if this was really needed, and if it had hope of doing what was expected of it, no objection should be made to its issuance. Consequently, no word was raised against it, at once. When, however, on the apparent subsidence of the concern of the Muskie Committee, it appeared that it night be wholly unnecessary, the reservations concerning its propriety - as u University gesture came to the fore, and I thought it best to withdraw it.
