X-ray/Electron Diffraction Sample Analyses I reviewed our discussion with Dr. Nathans.. We do not have a capability for doing X-ray diffraction in-house. Any work that we need to have done we send to a local spe cialized laboratory. If you need X-ray diffraction on one or more samples in addition to other analyses, it may be to your advantage to have us take care of it. If X-ray dif fraction is the only analysis required, it is probably more convenient for you to use a source (e.g. metallurgical laboratory) which exists in your geographical area. On single particles we can offer you electron dif fraction by means of our RCA EMU-4 electron microscope. This technique has a sensitivity of 1.8 x 10_15 g for 0.1 micron particles and 1.8 x 10~12 g for 1 micron particles. ; (Note: In comparison, X-ray diffraction performed on gross materials has a sensitivity of approximately 1 - 10 mg.) Qualitive identification is performed by comparison of the unknown spectra with standards. (Note: This technique cannot be used on non-crystalline materials.)
