i Power Plant Open House Scheduled The Public Service company of Colorado will unveil its new $23million ultra - modem Arapahoe steam electric generating plant in an open house for the public next Saturday and Sunday. For the company, it marks the completion of one of its key gener ating projects in a $90-million con struction and exjjansion program. For Denver, it poses a guarantee of adequate power for the area's ever - expanding population and ever-expanding and varied-type in dustry. THREE-UNIT PLANT. The project, at 2601 South River drive, is a three-unit generating plant, with an installed capacity of 132,000 kilowatts. The first unit was opened for op eration Oct. 31, 1950. The second unit was opened in March, 1951, and the third unit in November, 1951. So far, the project has generated 1 billion kilowatt hours. Approximately 2,310 tons of coal are required to keep the three gi gantic turbo-generators operating at capacity each day--to give one illustration of the plant's scope of operations. That amount of coal would load up a train of forty-six cars. CAPACITY ILLUSTRATED. To illustrate further, the 1 billion kilowatt hours of electric energy the plant is capable of producing annually on a twenty-four-hour op erational plan would: Furnish enough electricity to cook meals for 1,000 families for 930 years. Operate all the street lights in downtown Denver night and day for more than 300 years. Supply all the street and highway lighting requirements in the entire United States for four months. Operate all the electric coaches on the Denver Tramway system for forty years. The plant, itself, was placed into construction four years ago. It is powered by high pressure steam from ten-story-tall boilers. Each of the three turbo-generators is capable of producing 40,000 kilo watts. ADDITIONS POSSIBLE. It has two 250-foot tall smoke stacks to carry off smoke and gases and is constructed to allow addi tions to the plant later, if expan sion of city and industry should dictate increased production. Company officials forecast the open house would "attract thou sands" in the Denver area and par ties were reported organizing in out-state towns for trips to Denver to inspect the plant. It is of the most modem design and "incorporates the best electri cal engineering planning" in the nation, company officials said. WAD02287
