Asbestos is a broad term applied to a group of fibrous minerals such as amosite, chrysotile, crocidolite, etc., composed of silic.a tes of iron, sodiu.-rn, calcium and/or magnesium. I b. The most critical use of asbestos in the Navy from a safety vievpoint is in the fabrication, installation, repair or removal of pipe and boil<~r insulation materials. Some workers sustain accidental contact~ eH,her while employed in various capacities Yhere asbestos products are processed or when worl:in6 in plant areas in which an environmental pollution of the nir exists due to asbestos. The severe effects of asbestos on the lungs is the main factor for considering the elimination of azbc::;tos as an insulation material oh piping, ducts and boilers, References (a) and.
