NEW FORMULA
Basically, the new formulas involve the same change that was recently made in P&L House Paint 300 Outside White. The traditional inert pigment mixture of silica and magnesium silicate has been replaced by magnesium silicate alone. The change reduces the settling tendencies of the paint and improves its overall service ability. General properties remain the same.
The revised U.S. and Ganadian formulas carry different code de signations, because the vehicle in the former consists of a mixture of safflower and linseed oils; the vehicle in the latter Is linseed oil, alone. S.afflower oil has been a constituent of the U.S. formula since May 1963- Safflower oil is not used in the Canadian formula, because the oil is prohibitively costly In Canada inasmuch as it has to be imported from the U.S. The U.S. and Canadian formulas offer the same technical features and the same general qualities, despite this difference in binder.
MOLD RESISTANCE
P&L House Paint 317 Mildew and Fume Resistant White owes its mold dr mildew resistance to a high, zinc oxide content and to the presence of added fungicide. The fungicide content was tripled in 1962 (beginning with formula CE317 in both U.S. and Canada). This change seems to have been beneficial for no complaints were regis
tered on mold development during 1963. The fungicide in P&L House Paint 317 Mildew & Fume Resistant White is a mercurial compound. Because mercury is toxic, the following precaution i^ incorporated in the directions-for-use: "Good personal cleanliness should be observed when using this product".
Prior to applying any mildew resistant paint, it is essential to pretreat the surface in order to destroy mold and mildew that may
be embedded in the surface* The following wash is recommended on our label:
Trisodium Phosphate (1)
Household bleach
(2)
Powdered detergent (3)
Warm water to make
2/3 cup 1 quart
1/3 cup 1 gallon
Note: Proprietary agents that may be used are: (1) Soilax, (2) CloroX, (3) Tide.
Scrub the above on the surface, rinse and allow to dry. Paint promptly to avoid reinfection.

FUME RESISTANCE
PitL House Paint 317 Mildew & Fume Resistant White contains no lead pigments and no lead driers. These are the constituents that make ordinary white paint blacken or discolor where sulfur gases con taminate the air. Sulfur gases are common in industrial areas, oil fields and harbor locations.
TINTING
P&L House Paint 317 Mildew & Fume Resistant White is free chalking and should, therefore, not be tinted. Tints would fade badly. Tinting may also destroy fume resistance since many types of color ants contain lead pigments.
