PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT GF-1423 MONTHLY HIGHLIGHT REPORT - AP.RIL 1971 RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS DIVISION SECRET - COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL I. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS (South Bound Brook) A. FELTS AND PAPERS Gasketing Laboratory work has been completed on a new neoprene asbestos gasketing formulation designed to meet ASTM specifications. A plant trial is planned to confirm the findings and provide a small inven tory for sampling. Four new GAF SBR latex binders, 700-30 series, submitted by Chattanooga R&D are undergoing screening for use in asbestos gasket ing. B. AUTOMOTIVE Cold flow and tensile strength characteristics of the moldable mastic formulation have been improved and samples of the full wheelhouse cover were submitted to Ford for final tests and acceptance. Full size units were shipped from Joliet to South Bound Brook to evaluate handling and packaging performance in transit. Some shifting caused slight distortion which will be corrected by minor modification in the packaging. The units will now undergo hot and cold storage tests. Ford has requested submission of a non-staining mastic for head liner (roof) application and investigation is now underway to deter mine if the requirements can be met. R&D is also working with Marketing to assist carpet manufacturers in the use of mastic sheet combinations as backing in a complete, single, molded floor covering assembly. C. THERMAL INSULATION A carload shipment of asbestos-free Calsilite in various sizes was made and shipped to Houston, Texas, for application in a Dow Chemical plant. Comments on the field acceptance of this and pre viously prepared smaller lots of insulation are awaited. Laboratory work has shown that the weight loss and strength retained after soaking heat exposure (1250F) can be improved if necessary by the partial replacement of organic fiber with chopped fiber glass. Analysis of the drying oven performance has been made and evalu ation of supplemental micro-wave moisture removal is in progress. MICH08518
