48, Engineering introduced the program to provide a 50-50 split between the Eaton and Rockwell 16% x 7 brake for use with our SW571-573 bogies. The Eaton brake was to be used on the DM(DMM)400 and 600 series vehicles as outlined in SED Letter 524-73; all other models were to use the Rockwell brake with the 44,000 lb. bogie. At the time the split was made and to the best of our ability, this provided the 50-50 usage. However, since that date Purchasing has brought to Engineering's atten tion that this in fact does not provide a 50-50 split and, due to procurement problems with Rockwell-Standard, has requested additional model usage so that the out standing orders for the Eaton brakes can be held to meet production commitments. Therefore, based on our current backlog and similar model usage, I am authorizing by copy of this letter to Mr. Eltonhead the immediate release of the Eaton 16% x 7 brake for application on the RD series vehicles with the S.W571-57 3 bogies for domestic use as outlined in AN-V1195-1. This will increase the usage of the Eaton brake by approximately 900 bogies per year and will provide a 50-50 split based on our current backlog of vehicles.
