I f dust le v e ls In work areas are controlled w ithin safe lim its asbestos w ill not be a hazard to personnel. WHEN SHOULD CAUTION LABELS BE APPLIED TO PRODUCTS?______________________________ ___ Most asbestos fib r e con tain in g products are com pletely s a fe because the fib r e s are locked in w ith b in d ers. Only when such products are machined or fa bricated should precautions be taken. Those other products which may re le a se asbestos fib r e s in to the a i r during h an d lin g, a p p lic a tio n , e tc . should have caution la b els applied. . WHAT SHOULD EMPLOYERS BE DOING TO PROVIDE HEALTH PROTECTION FOR EMPLOYEES Employers o f asbestos Industry workers should do the fo llo w in g to safeguard th e ir employees and to comply w ith the laws o f many c o u n trie s : 1) Provide a s a fe working environment by keeping le v e ls o f asbestos fib r e s below p e rm issib le lim it s ; 2) While co rre ctiv e measures are being taken employees should be protected by other means such as the wearing o f an approved re s p ir a to r and/or s h i f t r o t a t io n . These should be considered only as temporary or. emergency measures; 3) Monitor the a i r p e r io d ic a lly to determine dust le v e l; 4) Post warning sig n s in work areas where asbestos Is used , when s p e c ia l precautions should be observed, when re s p ira to ry equipment should be used, e t c .; 5) Provide pre-employment, animal and term ination m edical examinations and check-ups fo r a l l employees exposed to asbestos d u st; 6) Provide showering and change o f c lo th e s area so asbestos i s not carried out o f the area; 7) Educate employees concerning p o ssib le , hazards o f a sb e sto s, and on how to avoid them.
