While the article deals with a method for doing an epidemiological study in a situation such as this, it does give some valuable clues on long term effects. Above 300 ppm. Time Weighted Average (TWA) exposure there was some indication of a slight effect on liver function. While this study is good for only about 20 years exposure, it is comforting that no evidence of insidious long term effect was found. After thorough discussion, it was agreed that inasmuch as Vlolafe work in Italy was on acetylene based VC, whereas about 90% of U. S. production is based on ethylene, we would have to run a parallel study on both sources with cost pro* rated over the whole industry. The following reconmendatlons will be made: 1. The risk of public exposure is so great that the industry must carry out a good animal study. 2. Parallel studies should be made on acetylene based and ethylene based VC. 3. An industry epidemiological study should be carried out. 4. Material will be bought on bid. Dr. Johnson of MCA is to explore details of amount and shipment schedule with Industrial Bio-Test. It appears that about two tons of each type will be needed. Total cost w6uld appear to be a little over $100,000/year for a three-year period. If the industry members agree to funding on a pro-rata basis, a small steering conmlttee will be set up to work out details with Industrial Bio-Test. Major European companies will be approached to see if they might like to take part to get the advantage of the data.
