ABSTRACT: Physical and chem ical characterizations show that the heparin-quaternary aisonium salt complexes can be reproducim1y prepared from a given lot of a quaternary ammonium salt. Local toxicity studies also indict te that both the tndodecyl methyl ammonium chloride-heparin and tricapryl methy 1 am mom um chloride-heparin complexes e icit qualitatively similar responses, while quantitatively, the T AC-he par in complex produced a locally more severe response. Singl =-d ose toxicity studies of the heparin complexes, carried out in mice show that the TDMAC-hepann complex is the more toxic with an LD50 vaL ue of 3.3 mg/kg, as compared to an LD50 of 195 mg/kg for the TDMAC-he >ar in complex. This toxicity gradient is perhaps the reflection of iji creasing solubility of the complexes in the biological medium with the (C9) capryl-based heparin com pi ex (TCM AC-heparin) being the most soluble. However, because of the possible danger involved with the forma ion of toxic gases, the authors studied the decomposition of variou materials. Tests were performed on: Polyvinyl chloride-containing materials; Neoprene compositions; Rigid foams (urethanes, isocyanate 5) Miscellaneous materials (including jute, fiber glass and pol ethylene) using a stagnation burner arrangement. It was found that the chlorine-containing materials evolved hydrogen chloride v-( ry readily, its rate of evolution being strongly temperature depended t. The fluorocarbon propellant and C02 were the main products fount, on decomposition of the foams, whereas among other products jute compc sitions liberated methyl chloride. The analyses were performed ns ng mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy. A review of the combustion products of various polymers is also included.
