losses in the manufa turing plants. Information from this survav
tabulated. The following summary reports are submitted for each o: t
83 chemicals: (1) A flow diagram showing industrial lata on t
amounts used for var ous applications; (2) A one-page assessment
the data gathered on toxicology and environmental persistence: (J)
computer printout of a ubulac summary of the important lata gatnerr
and (4) Copies of the 21 most pertinent abstracts found in the area

Abstract: Cases of ac its vir.yl chloride intoxication ir. workers ar extremely rare and nr usually due to massive exposure to the substance during work i closed areas and during accidents. Under tr.s indicated condition s e '' an short-term breathing c: vinyl chloride car. cause sudden loss of co nsciousness and a state cr narcosis. Ir. those cases when the patient : s not immediately removed fret -.he gas-filled room, a coma may devel ip that is lethal as the result of respiratory arrest. with timely ren qer ir. g of first aid, patients -con emerge fro? the comatose condition but consciousness may remain clouded for a short time. Over the next few days, headache, dizziness, general weakness and an incline tier, to bradycardia and arterial nyootony are observed. The oatiant or ctically recovers in 5-7 days.

manufacturing polyvinyl chi'pride resins. Employees were administered
r,on-directed medical question!pares, sic in tests and pulmonary function
tests. It was determined |that a number of employees had developed
allergic sensitization to trypsin, resulting m respiratory
impairment. Some employees who have not been sensitize! have still
developed mild upper resnif: at ory tract irritation. It was also
determined that several en bloyees who handled the surfactant a x * 1
3-73 had periodically exp-e pieneed upper airway irritation, gagging,
and shortness of breath. Th s problem was judged to re the result of
poor work practices and nij> serious health consequences from tens
exposure were observed or act ici pa t ed .

ABSTRACT: The objectives of this research were twofold: (1) the utilization of an animal mod; to evaluate the functional effect of Di-2-ethylhexylphthalate (DEHP) accumulation,- and (2) the development of an in vitro testing proc dure that could be correlated with the animal studies. The rate of ext: action of DEHP from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is dependent upon both the temperature during storage and the lipid content cf the medium, DEH? so obtained is in true solution, with particle sizes less than 0.22 micron. Tissue culture studies demonstrate that solubilized HP in varying concentrations inhibits
the growth and ultimately hi.11s human diploid fibroblasts. PVC and siliconized glass transfused rhesus had abnormalities in liver his topat hology and li-ver func ions for up to lu months following cessation of transfusions. DS HP or silicon persisted in the tissues for up to lu months post-tr in s fusion. Both the control rhesus and those transfused with platelet processed in polyethylene containers were nor mal.

ASST PACT: A study was un|d ertaken at the Flammability Research Center of the University of Utah to determine the physiological and t oxicologicai 1 effects of smoke. Four classes of materials were selected for study: cel l|ulosics, urethanes, polyvinyl chlorides, and Douglas fir. Smoke cha mbers and animal exposure chambers ware developed for the anal ys: s of smoke and its components and the observation of effects of combustion products on animals. The effects of combustion products on survival response in rats were measured, and toxicological studies otl rats under exposure to smoke were made. The effects of combustion n the eyes of the animals are the subject of continuing expenaentatio n. Small-scale laboratory fire experiments are being correlated vi th Yull-scale fire tests conducted at the National 3ureau of Standard s. Selected case histories of fire injuries are being studied to de t arsine the medical history of victims until

mg/kg/day of di(2-ethyl hexyl)
phthalate in canine plasma was
administered to beagles for 21 days. No consistent compound-related
alterations were observed in animal behavior or hematological and
clinical chemical paraaet ers. Terminal body weights, organ weights,
and organ/body weight ra tios were acceptable normal limits and
comparable to control values. Compound-related hist omorpholog ic
alterations were not observ ed in dogs receiving various concentrations
of di(2-ethylhexyl) phtha late leached from PVC blood bags during
sto rage.

ABSTRACT: A 6-day survey was conducted in the Niagara Falls area to determine the concentration <t>f vinyl chloride in the atmosphere, Samples were obtained in a re$ ider.tial area adjacent to the chemical plants where vinyl chloride em ssions were suspected, in areas around the plants, and in other a teas o: Niagara Falls. The highest concentration of vinyl chlor de measured was b 0 cob for a 5-hour integrated sample observed at - residential area two blocks east of a
vinyl chloride polymerization plant. Grab samples taken downwind of chemical plants exhibited a hign of 28 ppb. Samples taken from downtown Niagara Falls and tip wind north of the chemical plants contained no detectable viny chloride. The areas surrounding the chemical plants, including th e adjacent residential areas, are also affected by emissions into tine atmosphere of chlorine and other
halogen ated compounds as exh: bited by the deterioration of metal surfaces, particularly aluminum vind.ovs and doors.

The potential for VC exposure was evaluated by analyzing he PVC materials for entrained or encapsulated VC and by analyzing a ir samples collected during the meat wrapping and welding ope rat tics f or VC. The results of all analyses are shown. The potential for eif osure to vinyl chloride monomer at the 0.1 ppm level was not found to exist in either of the two operations studied. No vinyl chloride monoo er was detected in the PVC materials.

The toxicity of dibutylphthalate depends upon the modality of its
introduction to the organism. Host toxic are its fumes heated above mOC which penetrate and cons use the lungs. The substance is weakly toxic in oral application, It does not possess skin absorptive capability. Dibutylphthalate ossesses a highly cumulative effect in inhalation and ingestion. The c u mulative coefficient falls just short of one, which explains the hype r s e.nsitivity associated with it.

ABSTRACT: The concentration or the plasticizer, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DSHP) , in the ?la sma was measured after storage of the whole blood in polyvinyl chloric e plastic bags at uc for up to 38 days
in either ACD or C?D. The plasma rom ACD-stored whole blood contained iiore DEH? than that from CPD- sjtored whole blood. The continuous-flow cen tri fugat ion washing procedulr es removed about 98 per cent of the DEHP from ACD whole blood stor ed for 33 days at UC. DEHP was assayed in the plat elet-rich plasma, pi atelet-poor plasma, supernatant of the platelet concentrate, washed platelets, and washed red blood cells
prepared from CPD whole bloo d. Very little DEHP was found in the washed red blood cells and plat elets, a small amount was found m the platelet-poor plasma, and a large amount in the supernatant of the platelet concentrate. A great er amount of DEHP accumulated in the platelet concentrates that were stored at 22C than in those stored at UC. Vast platelet concentrates rom CFD whole blood were stored at 22C for 72 hours, the amount of D EH? was about four times that observed after uc storage for the same len gth of time. (Author)

i.marily concerned with toxicological
evaluation cf polyvinyl chlor ide and, more specifically, the commonly
used plasticizer, di(2-ethyihexyl) phthalate (DEHP). Evaluations are
concentrated on long range, sub tie toxicity potential, although basic
acute and subacute studies are also utilized. Plastic composition
studies, acute toxicity stu ies, tissue culture studies, subacute
toxicity studies, metabolite identification, teratogenic studies,
neurologic studies, larger
nimal studies, analyses of human blood
exposed to plastics dur i jg hospital procedures, and possible
statistical analysis of human atients following extensive exposure of
blood to plastics are i nc 1 idded. Selected findings indicate that:
Plastic components which c ofttair. DEHP as a plasticizer are toxic to
L-929 cells in tissue culture; DEHP appears to prevent implantation of
fertilized ova in rats and } ice; DEHP affects rate and amplitude of
contractions in isolated rat hearts; DEHP is hydrolyzed in vitro by
liver microsomes and aitochond la but not by cytosol.

prepared from a given lot of a quaternary ammonium salt. Local
toxicity studies also indict te that both the tndodecyl methyl

chloride-heparin complexes e icit qualitatively similar responses,
while quantitatively, the T AC-he par in complex produced a locally
more severe response. Singl =-d ose toxicity studies of the heparin
complexes, carried out in mice show that the TDMAC-hepann complex is
the more toxic with an LD50 vaL ue of 3.3 mg/kg, as compared to an LD50
of 195 mg/kg for the TDMAC-he >ar in complex. This toxicity gradient is
perhaps the reflection of iji creasing solubility of the complexes in
the biological medium with the (C9) capryl-based heparin com pi ex
(TCM AC-heparin)
being the most soluble. Experimental evidence
indicates that the toxicity of T DSAC-he parm treated poly (vinyl
chloride) devices is very low.

weeks during daily i.v. = intravenous administration; an efficient
method for analyzing DZH? by ga< chromatography utilizing an internal
standard has been developed; and seme components of renal dialysis and
cardiac bypass units are toxic to L929 cells by tissue culture

ABSTRACT: The purpose of tbi project was to determine the coaDustion efficiency of plastics whe burned in several types of laboratory
inci ne ra tors . These laborata ry units were designed to simulate the primary flame zones of nun icipal incinerators. The parameters of efficiency considered vere: Pe rcent of material consumed, the chemical 'cleanliness' of the gaseo ijs effluent, the rate of production of flyash, and the more obvio us environmental effects of the gaseous effluent, flyash, and resi dlue-ash. Several pure resins vere burned individually in several laboratory incinerators. Also, several mixtures of plastics and a garbage recipe were burned. Results are presented here from analyses o f the effluent along with the effects of each effluent on rats and plan ts for 1- to 3-hour exposures.

ABSTRACT: Little data is ava iL able on oxidative degrative behavior of
materials used in coal lines under truly dynamic conditions
approximating the mine envirojs meat. However, because of the possible
danger involved with the forma ion of toxic gases, the authors studied
the decomposition of variou
materials.
Tests were performed on:
Polyvinyl chloride-containing materials; Neoprene compositions; Rigid
foams (urethanes, isocyanate 5)
Miscellaneous materials (including
jute,
fiber glass and pol ethylene) using a stagnation burner
arrangement.
It was found that the chlorine-containing materials
evolved hydrogen chloride v-( ry readily, its rate of evolution being
strongly temperature depended t. The fluorocarbon propellant and C02
were the main products fount, on decomposition of the foams, whereas
among other products jute compc sitions liberated methyl chloride. The
analyses
were
performed
ns ng mass spectrometry and infrared
spectroscopy. A review of the combustion products of various polymers
is also included.

ABSTRACT:
A method is developed for improvi ng the polyvinyl chloride tapes for the purpose of decreasing their gas emanat on. The overall gas emission of organic substances from the improved specimens of polyvinyl chloride tapes as a result of the treatment with 50% urea solution is reduced by a factor of 2-1/2. The improved polyvinyl chloride tapes give $ff volatile chemical substances in small concentrations, which with long duration of their action on the organism cause only a weak btilogical effect. As a res ult of the treatment with a solution of urea there is an improvement in the electri Cc 1 insulation properties of the polyvinyl chloride tapes serving the purpose for hich the materials are intended without change in their strength characteristics
