Sample results indicated four operations with employee exposure levels in excess of the 0.5 fiber/cc permissible exposure limit for asbestos. It is recommended that employees performing these jobs wear respiratory protection (NPSP 220E). In addition, the plant should explore engineering solutions (i.e. increased ventilation, enclosures) to control employee asbestos expo sure. Employees should also be instructed on the hazards associated with asbestos and good work practices to minimize exposure to asbestos dust.- All other samples results indicated employee exposure levels for asbestos to be within allowable exposure limits. As required by the asbestos standard employees exposed to concentrations in excess of 0.1 fibers/cc are required to have an annual medical examination which is to include a chest x-ray and a pulmonary function test. Finally, those employees sampled shall be notified of their sample results in writing within five days of receipt of this report. Sample results determining employee exposure levels to formaldehyde in the plastic piston cap operation indicated all concentrations below the 1 ppm permissible exposure limit.
