Meeting of Members. October 21, 1964 WHEREAS The Industrial Hygiene Foundation of America, Inc. , which was incorporated in 1941 as a nonprofit research association of industries for the advancement of industrial health, improvement of working conditions and human relations of the people who work, traces its origin to the Air Hygiene Foundation of America, Inc. ; and WHEREAS Dr. Anthony J. Lanza was among the prime movers in estab lishing the Air Hygiene Foundation as a fellowship of Mellon Institute in 193 5; and, , WHEREAS It was Dr. Lanza's outstanding accomplishment in identifying the etiology of silicosis (also called Lanza's Disease) which lead to his being in volved, and his concern with preventive medicine which resulted in Professor Drinker's being consulted in the identification, evaluation and engineering control of environmental hazards from silica; and WHEREAS It was Dr. Lanza's leadership as Chairman of the Foundation's Medical Committee which led to the publication of the first Medical Series Bulletin of the Foundation entitled; "Silicosis and Allied Disorders" in 1937, and numerous other contributions until his retirement in 1952; and WHEREAS The health of the people who work has also been greatly advanced through application of the principles of occupational health, in which Dr. 'Lanza pioneered, to the control of hazards other than those related to silica in industry; and WHEREAS We of the membership and Board of Trustees have lost a highly esteemed associate and congenial, admired and valued personal friend through the death of Dr. Lanza, who served as Trustee of the Foundation from 1942-1959; and NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED In this 29th Annual Meeting of the Industrial Hygiene Foundation of America, Inc. , that we regret the loss of our friend and founder and commend his high character and integrity as an ideal of personal conduct and as an example in the management of this enterprise; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That out of respect for the memory of our deceased friend and in recognition of his valued services to the Foundation, we do now direct that these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of this meeting and a copy of them be sent to the family of Dr. Lanza as a token of our sympathy. A motion was made, seconded by Mr. Waters, and unanimously carried that this resolution be adopted. Dr. Anna M. Baetjer read the following resolution proposing Professor Philip Drinker for election as Trustee Emeritus: "Professor Philip Drinker.was one of the farseeing men who were respon sible for the formation of the Industrial Hygiene Foundation (originally the Air Hygiene Foundation). He organized and chaired the Preventive Engineering Com mittee from its beginning until October, 1959 and he was a member of the Board of Trustees from October, 1942 to October, 1959. During the early period. Pro fessor Drinker was in close contact with the day-to-day work f the Foundation and participated actively in developing its program. Undoubtedly, Dr. Drinker's reputation was the basis for the confidence of the Foundation membership in the early industry studies which were made on the control of silicosis. 2.
