INTER-OFI'ICE M F M O To H.B. Carr At Burlington At Burlington datl October 8, 3.971 'jv iti'^File Now that the bottle polymerizer exhaust hood has been installed (final electrical hook-up is not completed to date),, it becomes quite apparent that the present Analytical Laboratory is too small for our need. Considerations for expansion are twofold: 1. Work Area a. Bench Space An eight to twelve foot long bench area is required for filtration of the polymer made in the bottle polymeri zer. At present only about four feet can be made avail able for filtration without having to "move over" too much equipment presently used and needed in that area. b. Hood Space At least one half of the area of the old exhaust hood is taken up by the Teledyne trace oxygen analyzer. This would make for a relatively small working area during the charging step of the bottles. c. Walk Area The walk area, particularly around the sink-bottle polymerizer area, is very small once work on the bottle polymerizer is started. Due to lack of another desk area, one desk has to remain in the laboratory adding to the al ready crowded conditions. 2. Safety Insufficient hood, as well as bench areas, in addition to the overall crowded condition in the laboratory, represents a great safety hazard, particularly in light of the constant use of monomer. The safety report from the Safety Sweepstakes Inspection of 9/30/71 amplifies the above observations. It is suggested to investigate the possibility of obtaining the use of the present Conference Hoorn (back of the old lunch room) for a laboratory. The Instruments, such as the gas chromatograph and IT}, and other equipment not requiring running water, could be moveu to that area. FWK/jt d^ F.W. Kanzler COLOR!TE 015112
