A Product Dev elopm en t o f NAT SOMAL LEAD CO M PA N Y " `D e t ic A ' NO RM ASAL NORMASAL, the n ormal lead salt of salicylic acid, is a soft, creamy white, crystallin e powder which is of in terest in the improvement of light, h eat, and moisture resistant ch aracteristics of a variety of organ ic products. NO RMASAL combines the stabilizin g ch aracteristics of both lead oxide an d salicylic acid from which it is made. It has a high degree of ultra-violet light absorption in combination with some organ ic media. It im parts exception al light fastn ess to organ ic films, and hence, NO RMASAL is particu larly well adapted as a stabilizer in the plastic an d protective coating in dustries. NO RMASAL is in soluble in the common h ydrocarbon solvents an d just sligh tly soluble in water. Its solubility in glycols and th eir derivatives will aid in the dispersion of this m aterial in pain ts and vin yl plastics. Tests have shown th at NO RMASAL increases the gloss retention and retards the ch alking rate of oil base pain ts. It m arkedly prolongs the color fastness of these pain ts. NO RMASAL improves the perform an ce of red lead prim ers in corrosion inh ibitive pain ts, particularly on salt water exposure. V in y l Plast ics--NO RMASAL im parts exception al ligh t fastn ess to many vinyl plastic formulation s. NO RMASAL sh ould be used with a basic stabilizer, such as, "Dutch Boy" PLUMB-O-SIL, " Dutch Boy" TRIBASE, or " Dutch Boy" DS-207. Such combinations enable the form ulator to stabilize his compound against both light and h eat degradation. Th e basic m aterial, which is an acid acceptor, and hence, a h eat stabilizer, also serves to preven t degradation of the n ormal lead salicylate. The compatibility of NO RMASAL with ethylene glycol, the glycol ethers, and other common vinyl plasticizers gives even dispersion and ligh t protection throughout the vinyl compound. Its ligh t color an d low tinting strength permits NORMASAL to be used without in crease in the amount of colorin g pigmen t in vinyl form ulation s. R u b b er-- NO RMASAL may be used as a combined activator an d anti-scorch ing agent in rubber compounds. At processin g an d storage tem peratures, it retards vulcan ization, and at n orm al vulcan izin g temperatures, it acts as an activator. Unlike other anti-scorching agen ts, NO RMASAL h as no h arm ful effects on the physical properties of the vulcan izates in which it is used. NO RMASAL is of particular interest in n atural rubber form ulation s. "DutcA PLUMBOSi L AN INORGANIC LOW- TINTING- POWER STABILIZER FOR PLAST ICS v it / $ '"DutcA PLUMB - O - SIL Plumb-O-Sil, a co-precipitated m ixture of lead orth osilicate and silica gel, is a soft, white powder which serves as an excellen t stabilizer for both vinyl ch loride and vinylidene ch loride polymers, particularly when it is desired to pro duce a clear plastic. Plumb-O-Sil can be tailored to fit the particu lar ch aracteristics of the plastic being used. For example, Plumb-O-Sil A is produced with a refractive in dex of 1.64 to 1.67, makin g it an ideal stabilizer for use in vin ylidene ch loride plastics. Plumb-O-Sil B, refractive in dex 1.58 to 1.60, is designed for use with vinyl chloride-acetate plastics of approxim ately sim ilar refractive index. "DutcA S2 A dibasic lead stearate that acts both as a lubricant and a stabilizer. ) A PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL LEAD COMPANY DS 207 DIBASIC LEAD STEARATE DS207* the dibasic lead salt of stearic acid, is a soft, pure white, un ctuous powder with all the apparen t lubricity of n ormal lead stearate. DS207 is in soluble in water and in most of the common organ ic solven ts. It reacts with warm turpen tin e form in g a waxy compound with an approxim ate 5% solubility therein. Th is compound is in turn soluble in min eral spirits which sug gests its use as a protective coating for un pain ted metal, the waterproofing of fabrics, etc. DS207 is soluble in some plasticizers. Its basic lead content, its low refractive in dex and its solubility in these plasticizers make it an excellen t stabilizer for some types of clear vinyl plastics. It serves a two-fold purpose. It is both a stabilizer and lubricant. DS207 added to lubricatin g oil stocks produces excellen t leaded greases. In this application its un iform ity of both basicity an d composition is an advantage. It is an excellent heat and ligh t stabilizer. It h as some degree of solubility in tricresylph osph ate an d several oth er plasticizers. Moreover, DS207 is very soluble in mixtures of either tricresylph osph ate or dioctylph th alate and some of the aromatic petroleum type plasticizers. It produces clear am ber films when the arom atic petroleum type plasticizer is used to the extent of 50% or more, or comprises the total plasticizer content. DS207 is also an effective lubrican t-- an excellent replacemen t for the lubrican t commonly employed with vinyl com pounds to improve flow ch aracteristics for molding, extrudin g and related proc esses. Th e solution finds use in the temporary protection of un pain ted steel. It may be applied by sprayin g, brush ing or dipping. For Lead ed G reases--DS207 makes superior leaded greases when mixed with lubricatin g oils. Th e greases are excellen t protectives again st corrosion due to the basic ch aracteristics of the dibasic lead stearate. DS207 greases are u n i form in composition which in sures positive protection again st wear of the mach ine parts to which they are applied. Cu ttin g O ils-- DS207 h as possibilities as a constituen t of cutting oils. Other potential uses suggested by its composition are, as a drier in some types of pain t, and as an additive to improve the brush in g ch aracteristics of oil pain ts.
