This report describes tests performed o'n CS-2151 (light yellow
. liquid) to evaluate its acute toxicity to Daphnia e n a . - The
report also provides the data generated in thisstudy.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

a9- The Daphnia ma na culture was obtained from a private hatchery
(A). Stock aphnids were held and cared for'at recommended test temperature (21+2OC). A -daily photoperiod of 16 hours light and 8 hours dark, with a 30-minute transition period, was maintained throughout the holding and testing period. Daphnids were fed up
. to the beginning of the test with a specially prepared food
suspension combination of active dry yeast and fish food (Tetra-Min) (B) First-instar young were segregated 24 hours prior to use in assays.
Each 250-ml glass beaker containing 200 ml test solution comprised a test chamber. Twenty (20) Eirst-instar young were introduced into each test chamber within 30 minutes following toxicant addition.
The acute short-term static bioassays were performed on CS-2151
using carbon-filtered well water of known composition and constant quality as the diluent (Tables l,2).
The studies performed in replicate used the fol.lowing toxicant
logarithmic concentrations: 21.75, 28.75, 3 8 . 7 ! 5 , 5 2 . 5 , and 70 mg/l. Mortality or immobility, temperature, dissolved oxygen level, and pH of all test solutions were measured at 24-hour intervals. Monitoring equipment used included ASTM thermometers, Orion temperature-compensating pH meter, a Yellow Springs dissolved qxygen.meter and a Taylor temperature chart recorder.
LC50 values with 95% confidence limits were calculated using .the probit program and 3M TRAC Computer system.
The test protocol utilized for this study was modeled after that described by ASTM 1980 (1).

In this replicated study, the Daphnia 48-hour LC50 values were 76 and 73 mq/l. Chemicals possessing an LC50 valule in this range are considered to be slightly toxic to the aquatic environment

The reported LC50 values were calculated on the basis of the
"observed mortality rates" and of the cadculated initial

concentrations of CS-2151 in test solutions. N o measurements of
the actual concentrations-were made at the end of the 48-hr.
bioassay.
