Burdick, M.D. araj-ECT Gasoline Storage Tank Incident ADDUEKH ADDSEKS BATH Cincinnati, Ohio Houston, Texas Septembe r 20, i960 This morning I received a telephone call from Mr. S tan. Eskridge of the Sales Department who stated that two men, employees of Vacuum Tank Company, were cleaning a gasoline storage tank for the Humble Oil Company that had contained their "Golden Esso" gasoline. The men had worked approximately an hour and fifteen minutes in the tank, had gone out for a fewminutes, and then returned for approximately five minutes when one of them passed out and the other became disoriented. They were iramedlately removed and taken to the Little York Hospital in Houston. This all o dcurrea between midnight and four a.m. At noon today I visited the hospital, talked with anrd examined the patients and obtained a spot urine specimen and blood lead specimen from each of them. Mr. a healthy young wh: te male, approximately 20 years of age stated that he was the one who i sad become confused in the tank. That he had felt completely well since entering the hospital, having had no headaches, nervousness, irritatil. ty, or anorexia. Physical examination was essentially negative Mr. a Mexican of about the same age, was the other patient. He sjd&^^rylittle English but I was able to get a reasonably good history with the help of a visiting relative. IlHe stated that he had been in the tank the same length of tins as but that he remembered practically nothing of the second trip into the "tank. He stated that when he cans to he was in the hospital and his only complaints were that he had slept most of the morning and that the burned areas |on his hips and thighs were painful. He was eating his lunch and apparently enjoying it, and stated that he had no headaches or nervousness. Exaiaination revealed some 2nd degree burns over his lower abdomen, buttocks anil thighs that were apparently chemical burns from the hydrocarbons in line fluid remaining in the tank. I have talked with their physician, Dr. Edward H. Djew, and he will observe both men closely for the next 36 hours for any evidence of organic lead intoxication.
