Goodrich INTER-ORGANIZATION CORRESPONDENCE FROM SUBJECT SEE DISTRIBUTION STEVE WILLIAMS HUD POINT OR D6PT & BLDG NO ri-io POINT OR DEPT & BlDG NO ALTC - B/418 DATE YOUR LETTER DATE THIS LETTER 10/11/88 MONITORING RESULTS ON VINYL CHLORIDE MONOMER (VCM) SUMMARY Twenty-nine of thirty-one samples for VCM were below 0.5 ppm, the Action Level. Two samples were above 0.5 ppm, the Action Level; but below 1.0 ppm, the TLV. DISCUSSION On August 30, 31, and September 6, 7, 8, 9, 1988, thirty-one personal samples were taken in Building 414, the Mass Poly Area, the Latex Loop Reactor Area, and the Hydrin Stat-Rite Pilot Plant to measure the operators exposure levels to VCM. The Vinyl Chloride OSHA Standard 1910.1017 states that the Permissible Exposure Limit for employees shall not be exposed to vinyl chloride at concentrations greater than 1 ppm averaged over an 8-hour period nor at concentrations greater than 5 ppm averaged over L5 minutes. Also, no employee may be exposed to vinyl chloride by direct contact with liquid vinyl chloride. The monitoring results showed levels of (less than) 0.25 to 0,63 ppm. The sampling results were obtained by means of a Mini Monitor called a Reiszner Badge. The Reiszner Badge is two inches in diameter and a quarter inch thick. The badge weighs 35 grams and contains 1.35 gram loadings of the Reiszner activated coconut-based charcoal to collect the VCM. The badge is easily placed near the breathing zone without restricting the movements of the wearer. The VCM analysis was performed in the Brecksville Department 8506 Lab. The attached data sheets show the results. SW:jin (SW/22-88) DISTRIBUTION: T. S. Bialke R. D. Hardesty R. F. Kiss ling E. J. Leeson E. Basile LIVHO IN'.i i Steve Williams ^Xsvj'S J. C. Carr K. L.
