It was agreed that Mr Howard would persevere with the view that a sophisticated article could only be written by leading exports in day-to-day touch with world developments in asbestos and health, in this case Dr Smither and Dr Holmes. 680 Daily Telegraph Y.Tfl Dr Gaze reported that the Scientific Consultant to the Daily Telegraph, Dr Michaeiis, seemed interested in writing an- article on the future of asbestos. The Secretary would approach the organising committee of the Louvain Conference to see if Dr Michaeiis could be invited to the Conference, 681 Nature fSR 320) Mr D. W. Hills was trying to persuade the editors to shortcut the publication schedule of this magazine in respect of the ARC Secretary's preliminary findings on asbestos content of the urban atmosphere. the 682 Press Advertising (SR 3^1) Sub committee The new theme, "Asbestos - It's a Natural", was approved. The Sub-Committee would discuss textual details and visual treatment, AAC It was agreed to take a full page advertisement in the forthcoming supplement on protective clothing in Fire Protection Review. Dr Gaze felt that this point should be borne in mind when the forms have to bo reprinted. 687 Asbestos Textbook (SR 332) WFH The Committee wore not in favour of subsidising the publication of an up-to-date textbook on asbestos. However, the AIC would be prepared to give support if any external interest arose in sponsoring such a publication. 638' Educational Vail Charts AHD A further reprint would be ordered of. the wall chart, based on an estimate of 145 for 1,000 received from the printers. 689 House of Lords (SR 33^) Sub committee Cape Asbestos Co Ltd would be willing to act as hosts to Lords Crook and Hennet and Baroness Cummerskill at cither Uxbridge or Park Street, whichever was most convenient. VPH 691 Public Concern (SR 3UU) It was decided not to participate in the public opinion study being organised by Market and Opinion Research International. MATTERS ARISING FROM OVERSEAS 692 USA (OL 2h) The state of affairs in How York where asbestos-based products, except brake linings, might be banned completely was of serious concern to all. Mi* Howe had written to Mr H, McNabb, Chairman, AIA/NA offering the AIC's fullest cooperation. The Secretary would arrange to circulate tho cutting from the Chicago Daily News relating to the possible ordinance on asbestos controls in Chicago. 693 Western Germany (CL 25) There had been encouraging signs that tho two asbestos associations in Western Germany were collaborating more closely than before. 63k Denelux (OL 27) Hill and Ifnowlton (UK) Ltd repertod that Hill and ICnovlton Brussels would no longer be handling public relations for the Comite d 1 Information do L'Antianve. 695 Sweden (OL 28) A conference on asbestos had recently been held in Gothenburg, sponsored by the Swedish Government Department responsible for the health of workers. The theme of the conference had been to encourage the use of substitutes for asbestos where possible and where this was not possible to use stringent precautions. The tone of the conference had been generally reasonable, but there had been a strong attack on asbestos by the Safety Officer of one -of the main shipyards. There had also been a programme on Swedish television about asbestos and sequences from "Why Asbestos?" vere used in this programme. Events in Sweden have highlighted the need for a Scandinavian information body and the Deputy Chairman would discuss this further with Dr Gaze. 6q6 General Informal di.scussions would be held with representatives of overseas Asbestos Information Committees to explore ways and means of encouraging closer cooperation and assistance, including a possible conference of information bodies. 697 CONTACTS WITH LARGE CUSTOMERS Mr Cross undertook to keep the Sub-Committee informed meetings to be held and developments which might have arisen in discussions with large customers such as Shell and XCI Ltd. of CAPCO KIN 0001311 -5- WPH wph 698 riWANCE The statement of expenditure for the year ended 31st March 1971 was submitted. The financial budget for the year ended 31st March 1972 was also submitted and approved together with the financial contributions of member companies 699 ARRANGEMENTS FOR AMNTJAL GENERAL NESTING It was agreed to continue with the present arrangement of having the AGM in June, but the budget would be agreed at the April meeting each year. 700 DATE OF AGM AND NEXT MEETING To be held on Tuesday, 22nd June.
