Problem Four of the last 12 batches of 5060 resulted in off-spec product. Two of these batches were thrown away as they could not be reworked. Two more 5060 batches were flaked as 5060 for fear that they would not yield any saleable 5460. B. Cause There are two possible causes of this trouble: 1. High quaterphenyl Santowax R 2. Poor catalyst distribution The second reason is purely mechanical and can be proven or disproven easier than the first. The chlorinator charge tank (weight tank) has hot had any agitation for the last 10 batches. The chlorinator circulating pump which is the only means of catalyst mixing is known to have a worn impeller and shaft. C. Cure 1. To eliminate one problem area the chlorinator will be shutdown after the present batch (No. 47) is completed and not started up until the circulating pump and weigh tank agitator have been put in good working order. ' 2. Upon startup Santowax R samples will be taken from the weigh tank before chlorination to establish composition. Present sampling point requires contamination with 5060. Vincent R.
