Biphenyl production was 3,544,988 lbs., the production of Santowax C was 1,024,896 lbs., and the production' of Santowax 0M was 4,000 lbs., for a total polyphenyl pro duction of 4,573,884 lbs. The yield on benzene was standard at 99.0% of theory. The tubular unit was down for a total downtime of 53 hours during the month. Twelve hours downtime was caused by failure of flange bolts at C Pass carbon trap. The other downtime was associated with shutdown due to extremely cold weather. A new high capacity pump was installed on No. 3 Biphenyl^ still. 1 This new.pump will in crease the Biphenyl distillation capacity to 7.0 M lbs/month polyphenyl.
PNP production was 1,306,145 lbs., the second highest production achieved to date. Total downtime for the month was 117 hours of which 68 hours' were associated with cold weather problems. The new reactor let-down tank was installed and put into operation during the month. This tank will prevent the sewering of PNP because of abnormal reactor operation. The yield on PNCB was 116.4 lbs/cwt. versus standard of 117.0 and last year9s usage of 117.5.
Santowax R production was 837,469 lbs. Inventory of Santowax R remains below the minimum because of continued high demand for HB-40.
Liquid Aroclor production was 3,050,268 lbs., and the production of Solid Aroclors was 590,690 lbs. for a total Aroclor production of 3,640,958 lbs. The Liquid Aroclor facilities were operated at reduced rate because of full finished goods storage tanks. Solid Aroclor production continues to be curtailed by pluggage in the still condenser and vacuum system. Efforts to correct this problem have met with little success. A major revision of the condensing system is indicated to'eliminate this problem. The production of Transformer Fluids was 519,042 pounds and the production of Aroclor Plasticizer Blends was 143,800 pounds. This production included 84,000 pounds of a 1242-1248 Blend manufactured for the first time.,
HB-40 production was 554;537 pounds. Shipments continued high at 597 M pounds,
reducing the inventory further to 169 M pounds at the end of January. Production
was curtailed during the month due tolow hydrogen pressure and the compressor was
shutdown and completely overhauled. Usage of Raney Nickel Catalyst was standard at
0.06 lbs/cwt.
Muriatic Acid (100%) production was 1,263,444 pounds. Theoretical recovery efficiency on HC1 was 63.7%. Rupture failure of the south decolorization carbon tower occurred
and resulted in the loss of approximately three days recovery. The north unit was
-received back from the fabricator and installed. The south unit.has been shipped
for similar repairs.

Chlorine production was 2.379.921 lbs.. Caustic Soda production was 1,882,764 lbs.,
and production of KOH was 1,042,220 pounds, for a total cell house output of
5,304,905 pounds. The yield on rock salt was 86.8 lbs/cwt. versus standard of 82.5,
the the usage of KC1 was 141.4 lbs/cwt. versus standard of 143.0. The department
continued to,operate with 31-32 cells on the line. The other five cells down for
rebuilding. Total downtime for the chlorine facility for January was 66 hours. Two
cells have been rebuilt with new concrete bottoms and nine decomposers have been
' converted to single stage units.
