Private & Confidential N.A. Morling, Esq. Rochdale . JLC/BT 23rd July, 1954 Dear Mr. Morling, With reference to our discussion at Rochdale on Wednesday, I thought it advisable (as mentioned to you on the telephone yesterday morning) to obtain Counsel's verbal prelim inary Opinion at once, and therefore I got my brother to arrange an immediate consultation with Mr. J.D. Cantley, Q.C. We saw Mr. Cantley yesterday afternoon and, owing to the time which has already elapsed since the receipt of Dr. Doll's letter of 8th June to Dr. Knox, Mr Cantley thought it essential for a preliminary letter to be written to Dr. Doll by T.B.A.Co. Ltd. forthwith. Accordingly I enclose the draft of such preliminary letter in the form settled for us by Mr. Cantley, and you will see that it is suggested that it should be sent by yourself as managing director of T.B.A. . Co. Ltd. No doubt you will have the letter despatched to Dr. Doll forthwith. Another copy of this letter to you and of the draft letter to Dr. Doll are, of course, being sent to Mr. Soothill. As I anticipated Mr. Cantley did not wish at this stage to give us any opinion on the somewhat unusual copywrite point involved; the extenbt to which this aspect of the matter may require close consideration later will depend on the nature of Dr. Doll's reply. Yours faithfully, Enc. P.S. JLC I told Mr. Cantley that I am of the opinion (as I told you yesterday) that there are certain fallacies or "non sequiturs" in the report, but Mr. Cantley thought (and I agreed) that it might not be tacti cally wise to attack at this stage the validity of the conclusions contined in the report.
