LAVERACK & HAINES in c o r p o r a t e d INSURANCE WHITE BUILDING BUFFALO, N. Y. HOWARD B. CLEAVEUND RICHARD L SLDS3DN HOWARD C. LAVERACK January 25, 1943 Dr. Robert A. Kehoe Director, Kettering Laboratory of Applied Physiology Cincinatti, Ohio Dear Dr. Kehoe: Case No. 74109322 ____________ EClaimant Rochester Products Division -- General Motors Corporation, Employer Dr. Nugent has sent me the results of the urinalysis and blood examinations in the case of and they are what I expected. However, there has been a ne^^mg]^ injected in this case and before submitting the hypothetical question to you which we discussed in Rochester I would like to have your advice. At a hearing which was called on December 16th Dr. Bryan was present at the conference with Dr. Nugent and the claimants attorney and myself. Dr. Bryan stated that he was not competent to definitely pass on a case of lead poisoning, however, he was convinced that this claimant was suffering from encephalopathy based on an examination made by a Dr. Akelaitis of the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. It seems that this doctor kas published a monograph embracing five or six cases. As a result we did not want a hearing on that day but asked for an adjournment as it was obvious the case never could be decided except by experts. There is no question but what the claimant is a mental case. Mien he was a youngster he was confined to the Strong Memorial Hospital in the Psychiatric Department for observation on behavior, so that at least as far as mental symptoms are concerned they were present long before he ever started to work for the Rochester Products Division. On this point is where I will need some help from you, in your study of lead poisoning have you embraced the subject of en cephalopathy, and if you have, can you qualify as an expert on this particular phase of lead poisoning. If not, can you advise of an outstanding authority on the subject. n Dr. Robert A. Kehoe January 25, 1943 I would prefer someone from the East if possible as it is quite expensive to produce experts, and if there is anyone in New York State or close by who can qualify it would be more economical to handle the matter in this way. This case will be on the calendar very shortly and would therefore appreciate having your advices as quickly as possible. to remain Thanking you, and with kindest personal regards beg Very truly yours, / DLH: mem cc: Mr. B. 0.
