Subject: Lead Warning Signs Dear Hank: I do not wish to be "difficult*' in the matter of the warning signs on pumps, but I do want to make the point quite clear that the authority for the wording on these signs is that of the tetraethyl lead industry. The Public Health Service has denied and will continue to deny that it has any authority or further responsibility for these signs. It has accepted our prior statement of what the industry proposed to do in this matter, without disapproval or objection, but without any acceptance of formal responsibility therefor. Our purpose is to act in the spirit of good faith , to keep them informed of the plans and acts of the industry, and to try, in all possible ways, to avoid the likelihood or the necessity of legislation or official action by the States. You shbuld not make any attempt whatever to indicate to pump manufacturers or to customers that they are required to comply with regulations of the Public Health Service. On the contrary, these are the requirements oi the TEL industry. I have not, as yet, written the final word to Dr. Price on this subject (for several reasons), but when I do I shall send a copy of my letter to Mr. N ame, who then will deal with it as he thinks be$.
