C MINUTES OF MEETING - PLASTICS COMMITTEE Oyster Harbors Club, Osterville, Mass. September 14, 1952 PRESENT: Mr. M. G. Milllken Mr. John P. Coe Mr. Howard S. Bunn Mr. Roger S. Firestone Mr. Dan M. Rugg Dr. D. S. Frederick Mr. J. R. Hoover Mr. F. H. Carman The meeting was called to order with Mr. Milllken In the Chair. NEW MEMBER The Chairman called on Dr. Frederick to report for a subgroup which had been asked to suggest a replacement for Mr. Abblatl. The suggestion was then made that Mr. Dan M. Rugg be appointed Vice Chairman of the Plas tics Committee and the full Committee agreed that this recommendation should be forwarded to the Directors. In keeping with the terms of ref erence for the Plastics Committee and with the view of having a represen tative from one of the smaller companies on the Committee, Dr. Frederick reported that it was the unanimous recommendation that Mr. Harry M. Dent of Durez Plastics & Chemicals, Inc. be suggested for appointment by the Directors to the Plastics Committee. It is the understanding that Mr. Dent will replace Mr. Rugg as a regular member and should thus serve for two years. This recommendation was unanimously approved by the Committee. OYSTER HARBORS CONFERENCE Plans for the two-day session were discussed informally. The Commit tee approved the proposal of the secretary that the out-of-pocket expenses incurred by the main speaker, Mr. Cyrus Chlng, be handled by a modest hon orarium. In consideration of Association members not attending this Conference, the suggestion was made that Mr. H. H. Reichhold of Relchhold Chemicals, Inc. be approached by Mr. James L. Rodgers, Jr. for participation in forthcoming activities of this group. During the evening of September 16, Mr. W. F. Leicester of The Borden Company was the guest of one of the members, and it was reported that this company is now a likely prospect for membership. Mr. Leicester will be Invited to the next Group meeting. mid-year meeting Plans for the full day Association meeting on November 25 were reported to the Committee and later to the Plastics Group. It was agreed that the Plastics Group should have its regular semi-annual business meeting on the evening of November 24 In conjunction with the Association meeting the fol lowing day. CMA 078148 Plastics Committee eeting September 14, 1952 Page 2 At the aforementioned business meeting of the Plastics Group, it was the recommendation of the Committee that Dr. Frederick report on the plasJ tics fair and other pertinent points regarding the chemical industry in Germany, as he will have made a trip to Europe just prior to the meeting. TECHNICAL SUBCOMMITTEE The general program for the Technical Subcommittee meetings scheduled for the following two days was outlined. Also a brief review of their meet ing in August was given, at which time it was brought out that factual re porting in the way of progress to the Executive Representatives on the MIT research would be highly important to obtain wider sponsorship of that work. The technical group has embarked upon a program to provide a suitable bro chure on accomplishments about three months prior to the end of the school year, The technical data book is now in the hands of the printer and it is hoped copies will be available in October. The mailing lists received from members for complimentary copies of the book showed a marked increase in number as compared with that of 1948. After correlation to eliminate du plicates, the list was reviewed to make sure that wide distribution was made to companies and plants yet not too many copies to any given unit. The mailing list was thus reduced to about 4,000. There are approximately 500 copies of the 1948 edition still on hand, and it was decided that a total of 6,000 copies of the new edition should be printed^ RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY The Committee unanimously agreed and the Plastics Group subsequently ^approved by a standing silent vote that a resolution expressing the sadness Pon the passing of Mr. Abblati be drawn up on parchment and provision be "made for signatures of all of his friends, said resolution to be transmitted to Mrs. Abblati. It is the understanding this should be available for sig natures during the next regularly scheduled meeting of the Group on Novem ber 24. SCHEDULE OF MEETINGS The next meeting of the Plastics Committee will be held Wednesday, October 22, beginning with luncheon at twelve-thirty at the Manhattan Club, New York City. On recommendation of the Committee and approved by the members, it was agreed that the next Oyster Harbors Conference should be scheduled for Sep tember 14 and 15, 1953- Respectfully submitted ?HC/mw September 23, 1952 F.
